Phuket has been voted the leading wellness destination by Canadian travellers in Air Canada Vacations' 2026 Travellers' Top Picks Awards. The result was announced at the company's Toronto Product Launch at Universal Event Space in Toronto, Canada.
Deputy Government Spokeswoman Ploytalay Laksmeesaengchan said on 25 September that Phuket received the highest number of votes in the Wellness category, reinforcing Thailand's ambitions to become a global health and wellness destination.
The award comes as Thailand seeks to attract more long-haul visitors through what officials describe as value-led tourism, focusing on the quality of travel experiences and sustainable tourism income rather than visitor numbers alone.
Canadian travellers cast more than 1.3 million votes
This was the second year Air Canada Vacations has held the Travellers' Top Picks Awards. Canadians were invited to vote through the Travellers' Top Picks website in 10 categories, with more than 1.3 million votes cast this year.
Phuket's first-place finish in the Wellness category reflects Canadian travellers' recognition of Thailand's range of health and wellness experiences, Ms Ploytalay said.
For Canadians considering Thailand, the result may put Phuket more firmly on the map beyond its beaches, resorts and nightlife. The island is already a major international gateway, making it a practical base for travellers seeking spa, fitness, relaxation and health-focused stays alongside a conventional holiday.
Canada remains a key long-haul market
Between 1 January and 21 September 2026, Thailand recorded 180,510 Canadian arrivals. That was an increase of 2.35% on the same period a year earlier, placing Canada ninth among Thailand's long-haul source markets.
The government views the Wellness award as an important opportunity to widen the base of higher-quality visitors from Canada and generate tourism value, experiences and income on a sustainable basis.
Thailand plans further health and wellness promotion
Ms Ploytalay said the government and the Tourism Authority of Thailand would build on the recognition by expanding comprehensive cooperation in health and wellness.
Their stated aim is to move Thailand further towards becoming a recognised global destination for health and wellness tourism.
