Phuket shop sign bars Israeli tourists, sparks debate

A Phuket shopkeeper has put up a sign barring Israeli tourists from entering, prompting a strong reaction on Thai social media after Phuket Times shared an image of it on Saturday, August 22.

According to a report from Naewna, the shop owner said the move followed a previous confrontation outside the business. The report did not identify the shop or give its precise location on the island.

Owner says sign is intended to prevent disputes

The shopkeeper said: "I was once verbally abused by Israelis in front of my shop. I cursed back that time, but my intention in putting up the sign is to prevent future problems arising from among #Israeli tourists."

Phuket Times had previously said it was preparing to submit a letter to authorities seeking an investigation into Israeli nationals at Patong beach. It cited alleged widespread dissatisfaction with what it called "arrogant" behaviour, including claims that locals had been chased away and outsiders barred from an area believed to have been acquired through nominee networks.

Online commenters call for wider action

After the image was posted, commenters backed the shopkeeper's decision. Some wrote that preventing problems early was the right approach, while others said they would do the same.

Other comments urged similar action across Phuket, with one saying shops should follow suit "until every shop in Phuket is affected". That comment said Thais should not allow foreigners to take advantage of or bully them, and should not welcome people with bad manners.

Several commenters called for Thai unity. Others said government agencies were weak and ordinary people had to protect themselves, while another said Phuket residents should unite because police, local administration and ISOC could not be relied upon.

One final comment urged people to "resist strongly", adding: "If you weaken, you will end up like the Palestinians."

A handwritten sign on a chalkboard on an unnamed shop at an unknown address isn't much to be worried about. As far as I can see, this story hasn't gone any further past the Phuket Times than Khaosod and AN.

If the shop is on a street with a lot of foot traffic by Israeli tourists, one of them will snap a photo and post it online, which will reveal the shop's name and location. We can then better determine if the owner has a legitimate grievance.

But if not many Israelis pass by, then it doesn't matter what the sign reads. It could say:

If past incidents are any indication, the sign will disappear in a couple of days. It's nothing for Jews or anyone else to worry about.

Meanwhile, about 500,000 Israeli tourists visited Thailand in the first four months of 2026, with over a million expected this year. https://www.nationthailand.com/news/general/40065980

That's a huge increase from 420,000 last year and 280,000 in 2024.

Clearly Israelis feel welcome in Thailand and have made LOS one of their top tourist destinations, particularly young Israelis who have completed military service. Signs in a handful of obscure shops or restaurants- Thailand has hundreds of thousands of hotels, eateries and shops that cater to tourists- mean nothing.

Zionists are Israeli terrorists. Hamas are Palestinian terrorists.

Both are evil, and at different times are the greater or lesser evil of the two. On Oct, 7, 2023, Hamas was the greater evil. Ever since then, Zionists have been the greater evil. Before that, and ever since 1947, the greater evil has been exchanged many, many times.

Beware the wrath of Islam, Judaism, and all religions.

It’s funny Israel’s response becomes the controversy, while Hamas conduct that provoked it conveniently fades into the background.

As someone pointed out earlier, Israel are terrorists only on their land while the other side is a global scourge

I oppose any rude or not inappropriate or not respectful behavior of any kind from anyone. It's true, and I'm ashamed and regret that there are too many Israelis involved.

Also too many involved in the latest nominees issue.

Most of the news in recent years are negative anyway.

But once you shift, in here, to political issues of other countries, or to ethnicities in a whole you miss the point.

We, falangs, living here, should refer to the problem of hurting the local culture, behavior standard, and people feelings. Do not take it to another level.

And every case should be dealt and punished so people will learn...

Don’t travel as much now but 20 odd years ago it was pretty common to see “No Israelis” in the reception of cheaper hotels.

By the same token I’ve seen “ No Arabs” on notices in Pattaya bars.

The history of this group of people keeps repeating itself over and over again. At this point, it’s fair to say they will simply never learn how to fit into civilized society. But of course, in their warped and fanatical minds, an unbelievable level of arrogance and self-righteousness is hardwired into their DNA: “We are God’s chosen people, and you are nothing more than a nuisance and ungodly pariahs.” And then they are constantly surprised when hatred towards them flares up time and again – nowadays even in Thailand.

That's right because my religion, (insert your religion here), is really god's chosen people.

So how dare anyone else think that they are.

Israel learned that when Germans /Palestinians try to wipe out Jews by committing genocide, NOT just to sit back and allow it to happen .

Israel isn't going to allow Palestinians to commit Holocaust part 2

Well said indeed. It’s basically Islam vs Judaism but somehow Islam plays the victim better and has more supporters.

Er... People don't ask the religion of others first. They ask the nationality.

Where is that guy Patong??? He used to post here. He was assuming that I was working as a washroom attendant. I guess he is busy calling all the Chabad Houses in Thailand to fight anti-Semitism.

The words "goy" and "goyim" (plural) originally meant "nation" in Hebrew, but came to mean "non-Jew" during Roman times. The English word "gentile" is the translation of "goy." It refers to ALL non-Jews, not just white Christians.

"Goyim" has never meant "cattle" in Hebrew or Yiddish. That is merely an antisemitic myth. "Goy" is sometimes used today by U.S. Jews in a mildly perjorative fashion to refer to the worst aspects of blue collar or Middle Class culture, but never to mean "cattle."
