Under Thai law, Aggravated Murder (Section 289), the death penalty is definitely on the table. For a county that is so reliant on tourism and social order, they can't look the other way.

Sometimes it is like a death penalty makes sense, and also The Code of Hamurabi — the concept of lex talionis, or an "eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth," meaning punishments should match the crime — especially for Thanapong, who beat young Diana to death.

No, overall stats tell you otherwise, however for farangs it may be marginally safer.

In Europe they'd look likely be released after 16 years, even after a lifetime jail sentence.

Thailand's judicial system has a more just solution.

Such a sad turn of events for two families. At least there is some closure for their loved ones although not the outcome they desired. RIP to the deceased.

From other news it appears these outcasts robbed and killed a family of three, so it might be their motive. Killing for a little money is about the most heinous thing anyone can do, but it happens quite a lot, especially here where lives are lost over the littlest things. Fragile egos and an already disturbed mind thinks getting rid of witnesses is better than going to jail. Large populations make it easier for these weirdos to target individuals , but CCTV makes it easier to catch them. Thailand has had it's share of serial killers over the decades, although it doesn't get the media attention they do in the west.

The judge didn't let anyone out, it will have been the Department of Corrections and he must have served his time.

Some people breeze through life in foreign countries and navigate them without a care in the world, and others seem to hit obstacles as soon as they land at the airport.

It's just a lottery I think, although reading up on a place before travelling there to learn local customs and what not to do certainly helps.

I think Pattaya is much more dangerous now than what it was when I was there, which is 20 years ago now.

There's 100% a violent underbelly there now, almost feel like walking on eggshells. I visit now and then but never out at night, i'm still relatively young as well.

Many people pointing towards the fact they left home at 4.30am, OK considering their age and both of them going, it is ' slightly off ' but not mysterious.

With both of them going together, my idea is they were going for a rendezvous for something or other, it would seem odd for them just to take a drive at that time in the morning together.

It is not relevant now, poor kids. RIP. Their life was just beginning.

I've no desire to go back, nor do I miss the place. I class is as a fun chapter of my life that's now gone.

We went once for three days around 2016, (we actually went and collected a BBQ, we bought through an advert, on the so-called Dark side) and after that brief trip, neither of us were keen to go back, and we never have since.

Four men, including suspects known as Pong and Thong, were taken from Huai Yai Police Station in Chon Buri to court for remand on 1 August 2026 over the deaths of five people.

The case concerns the killings of a father, mother and child, as well as two Russian siblings. The other two suspects taken for remand were identified as Fluke and Ball.

The men had been questioned overnight before police completed their records, took fingerprints and prepared documents for the remand application. All four appeared tense and declined to answer reporters' questions about an alleged motive or whether they accepted responsibility towards the victims' families.

Court remand follows overnight questioning

Police took the four suspects from Huai Yai Police Station after the overnight investigation process. A remand application allows police to seek continued detention while an investigation proceeds; it does not amount to a conviction.

The case will be closely watched by foreign residents and visitors, particularly because two of the victims were Russian. Chon Buri, including the Pattaya area, has large foreign resident and tourist communities, and the investigation is likely to draw wider attention to police handling of serious crimes involving overseas nationals.

Relative says she will not seek bail

Before Pong was taken to court, his aunt, who said she had raised him since childhood, brought food and drinking water to visit him.

She said she still loved him as a family member but could not accept what had happened. She said, the family would not apply for bail, saying there were no assets available as security and expressing concern that he could offend again if released.

The aunt said Pong's parents had not raised him when he was young. She alleged that his father had subjected him to violence, including beating him with an electrical cable, throwing water over him, using live electrics on him and throwing him onto a roof while he was still about one year old.

She added that Pong shared his father's interest in cars. He had intended to begin a new life and work to support the family after leaving prison, she said, but allegedly committed the latest serious offence within less than two months of his release.

The aunt said she knew nothing about police uniforms or equipment reportedly found at the home, and did not know whether anyone was behind the alleged crimes. She also said: "Pong seems to have been born to kill." She acknowledged that she had never scolded or disciplined him, and said he had not come to see her when he did something wrong.

Prime minister due to inspect scene

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, accompanied by National Police Chief Pol Gen Kittirat Phanphet, is expected to visit the scene personally.

This important information was not mentioned in the original article. Impersonating an officer in uniform and equipment for the purpose of commiting murder is SIGNIFICANT. Aunt's comment will be SIGNIFICANT in court. Prime Minister and Minister of Interior to inspect the scene is SIGNIFICANT too. Strong case for the death penalty under Aggravated Murder (Section 289).

Poor on poor rape is grossly undereported in Thailand because the victim does not count and the perp is unable to pay compensation.

That was the explanation given to me by a victim.

She told me when crime occurs against tourists/foreigners the police go into top gear for a result because crime against those categories is very "bad for business".

In her case she told me " The police not care".

I have always argued against the death penalty for what I always thought were sound reasons

Then a case like this comes along- and I realise how wrong I have been

I read awhile back that up to 65% of girls are molested in schools by the time they're 17 here. Like everywhere, rapes are under reported, especially in a country where losing face is part of the culture. One major reason I will move with my daughter while she's still in a village school. It's supposed to be 5.63 out of 100K here. Over 50% are from family members. Also says up to 87% of cases aren't reported.

A long wait on death row, then a fatal injection should await those two murderers, all for what, a few hundred Baht

I reckon, that these evil criminals won`t survive very long in prison. The inmates will take care of them and hand down their own sentence on them.

Cowardly killing children will not be tolerated by the inmates. It`s just sick and evil.

Thailand is mostly fine... during the daytime at least and excluding the roads.

The problem is at night and especially from midnight to sunrise, as that's when all the wasted scumbags are active because they don't do daytime... they get up late afternoon, eat, then take drugs and go about their scumbaggery until sunrise, hence why so many keep mentioning that nothing good happens after midnight in many places.

You also have to remember that the touristy places attract not just poor quality criminal foreigners but also the same section of Thais, as they all gravitate to what's on offer in such places. Rest of Thailand is mostly okay unless you do something stupid... which is same as everywhere.

Some thoughts

Monsters like these exist everywhere. The siblings were unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. These scumbags must be removed from society for our safety.

Once again, the siblings had nothing to do at that hour. I repeat, they probably had a meeting to buy drugs.

I don't think Putin will appreciate what happened. The Russians will put maximum pressure on the Thai authorities to resolve this as quickly as possible and demand immediate retribution. THE DEATH PENALTY

I'm so sorry for these kids. May they RIP.

To paraphrase George Carlin "think of how stupid the average person is, then realize that half of the people out there are more stupid than that". These murderers must be at the bottom end of the scale of human intelligence to think that they'd get away with killing foreign kids. There's a reason the boy was hogtied and the young lady's hands were bound behind her back but her legs were free and it wasn't for ease of transportation.
