Samui visa action sought over Palestinian flag row

Surat Thani security officials are seeking visa revocation and deportation for an Israeli restaurant owner and a French businessman after a Palestinian flag dispute on Koh Samui escalated into online threats and concerns for tourism.

Col Thitiphong Inwasa, deputy director of the Internal Security Operations Command in Surat Thani, said on 22 August that officials were preparing information for a provincial committee to consider action against Israeli national Jacob and French national Kevin.

Dispute began at Samui attraction

The row began when an Israeli tourist visited Samui Exotic Park, operated by Kevin, and became involved in an argument with him. Kevin had displayed a Palestinian flag and a sign welcoming Palestinians at the attraction.

Jacob later contacted Kevin and asked him to remove the flag, but Kevin refused. Their exchange was later circulated on social media, bringing the dispute into the public eye and leading to legal action.

The Samui Provincial Court subsequently fined Jacob 5,000 baht and gave him a two-year suspended prison sentence.

Officials said the situation worsened after an Israeli influencer based in France offered a 500,000-baht bounty for information leading to Kevin’s death.

Officials warn of tourism and security impact

According to security officials, the dispute spread widely online and created the impression that Israeli visitors were threatening people on Samui, while local residents were hostile towards Israeli tourists.

They warned that such perceptions could harm Koh Samui's tourism industry and raise security concerns. However, officials stressed that the matter began as a personal dispute between two individuals, not a conflict involving Israeli tourists and local residents.

Authorities also cautioned against attempts to portray the case as a wider anti-Israel issue, saying this could potentially develop into religious or ethnic tensions.

Checkpoints in place since 15 August

Officials cited the pair's failure to cooperate in resolving the dispute, as well as concerns that it could escalate, in seeking the visa review.

Immigration records show Jacob has lived on Koh Samui for about five years on a business visa and operates a restaurant. Kevin, who is married to a Thai woman from Rayong, has lived on the island and run Samui Exotic Park for about nine years.

Samui police have kept security checkpoints outside the attraction and near the two men's homes since 15 August to prevent further confrontations. Authorities said the measures were intended to stop the dispute developing into a wider conflict that could damage Samui's standing as an international tourist destination.

That is such a ridiculously dumb question it does not deserve an answer, but I can tell you this I know quite a few more Palestinians than you know.

Its quite a legitimate question .

You are claiming to know what Palestinians think because you know some .

How many Palestinians is you assessment made of ?

To give an accurate assessment of the Palestinian mentality , you would need to know at least 5 million of them .

So, how many Palestinian friends have you got ?

I cna understand why both parties are under investigation. The Israeli guy for aggression etc.

But the restaurant owner is breaking the law! It is not legal to display any foreign flag in Thailand, unless one is an official representative of that country, such as an embassy or consulate. Only the display of the Thai flag is allowed...

Flags of other nations are on display all over the place. I used to have a few Union flags at my house. I was having fun with my Scots neighbours who had Scotland flags flying.

When I asked my wife what she thought about the Government being so grossly pro Palestinian terrorists, she pointed out that in every location where there were seemingly misbehaving Israelis there was a strong muslim community, even in Pai.

So you have have it, it is more Anutin pragmatism, to keep the Arabs a sense of inclusion, justice and fairness a unnecessary accessories.

I would encourage you to be more careful with your language and the way you respond to post on this forum. How many people do you think have ever met 5 million people from one nation and actually had a conversation with each of them? That would likely take about nine lifetimes. And you are claiming that you could not get a sense of the way people feel generally without speaking to millions of people?

I think that a fair conclusion is that you like to argue just for the sake of arguing, and when your arguments stop making sense that's what we stop paying attention.

There is nothing wrong with my language on this forum .

My point is that you cannot state the opinion of 15 million Palestinians based on your five* Palestinians friends opinion .

Now, if you think that you can indeed grasp the opinion of 15 million people based on knowing 5 of them, then please explain why .

...and then you cannot bother to explain what, exactly, was illegal by French law. 🥱

The discrimination itself. French criminal law prohibits discrimination in access to goods and services on numerous grounds, including nationality, ethnic origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, disability, age, health status and political opinions, among others. That is what I was referring to.

Sorry no - it's illegal to fly the flag of any nation apart from Thailand, unless you are an embassy, official vehicle etc. Flying your own country flag below the Thai flag doesn't make it legal.

Flag Act of 1979: Under this Thai law, displaying flags of other countries in public places is restricted

That's correct according to my Thai lawyer BIL.

But hey, why let the facts get in the way of pro-Zionist cheerleaders as they rev up the crowd?

Legal Context: Under the Thailand Flag Act of 1979, public display of foreign flags is strictly regulated outside of designated diplomatic missions, international events, or authorized maritime vessels.

That law is outdated and - to our knowledge - never has been enforced before the Israelis started to complain.

If anyone can come up with an example of someone being prosecuted for displaying a foreign flag on their own property, we'd like to know about it.

There were numerous complaints when the Nazi flag was on display in Thailand

On the subject of knowing what Palestinians think, I do have a suggestion.

I've watched many many hours of random interviews with Palestinians on the youtube channel The Ask Project.

From that I've made a firm conclusion -- the vast majority of Palestiinians will NEVER accept the existence of Israel. In other words they do NOT want peace as the Jews aren't just going to leave.

Some people like to sugarcoat the situation. Raality is reality.

OK, I'm sure Israel demonizers will say, I don't blame them. Blame them or not. how does that offer any hope for a peaceful outcome?

When I was a lot younger there was a world cup and I'd invited an English couple to watch the game in my house, just for fun, to see how the would react, I hung up a Swastika flag in the living room. It was a Germany game. Those Brits did not even flinch. Joked and were not focused on the flag at all, just on the football.

This British reaction proves, a flag ned not cause emotional turmoil. Sensible people can keep self control, it's just a flag.

The chances of a peaceful outcome were pretty much screwed back in 1947 by the refusal of the Arab League and Palestinian leaders to accept the UN partition plan. Until all Palestinian and Islamic groups recognize the right of Israel to exist as the homeland of the world's Jews, peace is an impossibility.

Recognition is the step that precedes everything else in a lasting peace process. Once Israel has been recognized by all Arab states and formal, internationally recognized borders have been set with Lebanon and Syria through treaties, other matters can be settled through negotiations. Since Israel set borders and signed treaties with Egypt (1979) and Jordan (1994), no military actions have occurred involving those countries.

But as long as Palestinians cling to the futile notions of kicking out the Jews and a Palestinian state from the river to the sea, peace will never happen.

What are you going to do with the 14+ million Palestinians living in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank?

Expulsion was tried and failed in the 1940s.

Genocide is being tried now with disastrous consequences for Israel worldwide.

Forcing them into bantustans is the only thing that is left to try.

Israel will go the way of Apartheid South Africa, and rightly so.

Israel hasn't tried genocide, thank God.

No I don't have a good solution for both sides. Such doesn't exist.
