Samui water rationing begins 3 August after drought

Koh Samui will introduce rotating water supplies for seven days from 3 August after drought reduced available production well below daily demand, the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) Samui branch has announced.

The move follows a continuing decline in raw-water levels, leaving the island unable to produce enough tap water for residents and businesses. The PWA made the announcement on 28 July 2026.

Daily shortfall reaches 18,000 cubic metres

According to the authority, Samui's main available water supply for tap-water production, from the pipeline system from the mainland, is now about 16,000 cubic metres a day.

Average demand on the island is 34,000 cubic metres a day, creating a daily shortfall of 18,000 cubic metres. The rotating supply system is intended to spread the limited water available across all areas as fairly as possible.

The PWA has divided its service areas into a yellow zone and a red-green zone, with water to be supplied on a rotating schedule during the seven-day period.

It has asked households and businesses to store water ahead of days when their area is not being supplied, and to use only what is necessary.

Residents and tourism businesses affected

Some communities have already reported weak water pressure or no running water for several consecutive days. This has affected household use, cooking and hygiene, while some families have faced extra costs buying water from private tanker operators.

For foreign residents, long-stay visitors and holidaymakers on Samui, the immediate practical concern is to check with accommodation providers, landlords or local management offices about the supply timetable and whether water storage is available.

Restaurants, hotels, resorts and tourism operators are also facing higher costs for obtaining reserve water. Businesses have raised concerns that a prolonged shortage could affect visitor confidence and Samui's reputation as a tourism destination.

The PWA has not stated whether the rotating supply arrangements will continue beyond the initial seven-day period.
