Trump Pushes Kennedy for Deeper Vaccine Cuts

Featured Replies

Donald Trump is pushing Robert F. Kennedy Jr, the US health secretary, to cut vaccines more aggressively, according to reporting by the Wall Street Journal.

Kennedy, who leads the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), has previously been a leading critic of vaccination. The latest push comes after the White House put a hold on vaccine-schedule changes following polling that suggested they were a losing issue in the midterm elections.

White House Weighs Vaccine Changes Against Politics

The Journal said Trump wants Kennedy to make deeper cuts to the US vaccination schedule. It reported that the president raised the issue during a visit to Kennedy’s golf course in northern Virginia in May, asking whether the health secretary had the “yips”.

Trump also questioned, the Journal reported, whether Kennedy had been making enough reductions to vaccination recommendations.

Earlier in the process, the White House stopped changing vaccine recommendations after internal polling indicated that anti-vaccine moves would not play well with voters. The Journal also reported that Trump hopes “alleviating autism” will be part of his legacy and has taken issue with the pace of vaccine changes in recent months.

Polling Tracked Anti-Vaccine Risks In Swing Districts

Tony Fabrizio, a senior pollster for Trump, concluded in a December memo that scepticism towards vaccine requirements was politically risky for both parties, the Journal reported. Separately, the Rolling Stone reported that Susie Wiles had set a New Year’s Eve deadline for HHS to make changes so that vaccine policy would fade from view ahead of the midterms.

Despite those concerns, Trump’s priorities appeared to shift after the polling findings. Two days after the Fabrizio memo, the president issued a directive for HHS to align US vaccination recommendations with those of “peer” nations, even though the US was already making similar recommendations to other countries, the Journal said.

Kennedy Cuts The Routine Schedule, Then Judge Steps In

The impact of Kennedy’s policies was swift. The Journal said he cut the routine childhood immunisation schedule by one-third, reducing it from 17 recommended vaccines to 11.

A federal judge ordered a halt to the changes after a lawsuit filed in March by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The judge also paused the work of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which he said had been illegally formed under Kennedy, according to the Journal. Kennedy has not made further significant changes to the schedule since the court order, while the US government appealed the judge’s stay.

Autism Research, Executive Actions And Vaccine Backlash

Kennedy has continued to speak about autism and possible causes, and the administration has linked the vaccine issue to that broader effort. The Journal reported that Trump issued an executive order in May urging HHS to change vaccine recommendations, and Reuters reported that Kennedy sought to divert $5bn in funding—more than 10% of the National Institutes of Health budget—towards research on vaccines and autism.

Other researchers and medical groups dispute a link between vaccines and autism. Decades of studies into autism’s causes point overwhelmingly to genetics, and dozens of studies have found no connection between vaccines and autism, the article said.

Kush Desai, a White House spokesperson, did not dispute details reported by the Journal in a statement to the Guardian. He said the administration was responding to parents of autistic children who had “questions and concerns”, adding that those concerns had long been ignored or mocked.

HHS spokesperson Emily Hilliard said Kennedy and Trump were “aligned” in addressing what she called a “chronic disease epidemic affecting America’s children”. She said HHS would continue “evidence-based research” into the causes of autism and other chronic diseases.

In comments reported by the article, Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said Trump has held an anti-vaccine position for years and that his approach makes him unlikely to dismiss Kennedy despite rumours of leadership change. Offit also linked the administration’s stance to public health outcomes, saying measles and other diseases have surged, with measles at its highest rate in 30 years and increased deaths from whooping cough, flu and tetanus in recent years.

This whole sorry episode looks vile from every angle, but if Kennedy’s cuts were supposedly harmless, why did the American Academy of Pediatrics file a lawsuit the moment he slashed the schedule by a third?

The AAP's reaction says more than the politics ever could.

Makes Marie Antoinette's dietary advice to the starving of Paris seem grounded on common sense and empathy!

Sometimes you wish people giving medical advice trying them out on themselves first...

Drank bleach and shined UV-C light into his throat yet?

Bleach and UV work...even if Trump said to drink bleach which he didn't

It would have only be the most moronic Dawin award candidates effected.

As a side note they knew UV worked

both directly and indirectly to promote vitamin D production in the body ... that's why they told everyone to stay indoors and shut the parks and beaches, depressed, scared people tend to get sicker

Trump, his administration, Republicans in general, only care about winning the election. The health and well being of America is their last concern.

As history has proven some vaccines are incredibly helpful and quite necessary, ridiculously stupid goombas like Trump and Kennedy just don't get that, as they are blinded by partisan viewpoints.

I say that as somebody who very rarely gets vaccinated, however there are obvious examples where it is beneficial.

Anytime Trump offers medical advice the precise opposite should be done. The man is a street trash goon and knows very little about anything.

Yep, got all the childhood vaccines 1969. All of them. Still here.

Would like to see your scientific proof of the connection to autism, ( I have an autistic nephew, doctors say it was due to sister's marijuana use during pregnancy). I would like to see your scientific proof on these vaccines causing wokeness (although understanding societies inequalities is really more of a sign of educated vs. uneducated), causing men thinking they are women? Just more MAGA complete crap, say it and it is so. Swallow the B.S., MAGA imbeciles walk among us.

I

you probably one of the sheep that took 3 vaccines

rushed to get priority to get yours

I survived just fine with daily vitamin d and an emergency supply of lung protecting NAC in case I got covid, and I got it thanks to a cluster spread in the school of my kids that did not care anymore if everyone got it as they were not sent home

call whatever you want, I was aware of big pharma law suits against them for false advertisement, just look at vioxx and many many other, where it was more profitable to let some people die and sue them, then to take it off the market ...

folic acid in food might be one part of the cause of autism, as the brain needs folate, not synthetic folic acid, that was added to everything... and tylenol, because the adjuvants in the vaccines, has to show some effect that it does anything right... so there is the fever

and young parents that panic and give tylenol to little kids, which the liver cannot detox

but you do you and I do me

no clot shots, no boosters, no bull crap ...

maybe cancer comes ringing to the door and you will not know where it came from...

During the COVID-19 global pandemic, Trump publicly rubbished vaccines (while secretly accepting them himself in the later stages of his disastrous first term (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-covid-19-vaccine-january-white-house/)). His behaviour here is not simply ignorance/ anti-science - it's perhaps darker than that ..... It's more aligned with being chaotic/destructive/cruel - his signature strengths ..... Keep up to date with your vaccines, people. For the elderly/immune compromised - now that Prevnar 20 is available as a one-shot Pneumonia vaccine - consider getting that. It's readily available at hospitals and clinics throughout Thailand.

While I am in favor of keeping the population in check, I do NOT think that killing off the children is a way to do this.
Call me old-fashioned, but I think a healthy society is a good idea.

Well, you must be talking to young kids, not real old-timers.

Mitch McConnell (age 84) didn't get a polio vaccine at birth. And he got polio.

And he's basically dead now. 🤗

polio killed on the order of 1–2 million people globally, far fewer than diseases like smallpox or influenza—but it caused millions more cases of lifelong paralysis.

Author Note: Got polio, smallpox and flue vaccines and so far....well. 😀

Quite possibly the last "full generation in the USA.

Once preventative medicine has been withdrawn, sacrificed on the altar of scraping up a few more votes, then the toll from polio, measles, influenza and the other diseases which we had almost eradicated should reduce the next generation significantly!

A country now at the full height if madness.

You might think that things are already bad but every single day something crops up to make you wonder what planet we are on.

"The last major commercial manufacturer of iron lungs was the J.H. Emerson Company (founded by John Haven Emerson), which stopped production of the devices in 1970."

Darn, I guess it's too late to buy their stock......

Thanks to Trump and Kennedy, ancient disease like leprosy is rising in US and Kennedy just kill the chance of finding a vaccine prevention.

I gotta fet down to the store now. I hear they're almost outta bleach. You got yours, Karen?

I like your post and I am in my 78th year now and when I was a kid in the late 40s and early 50s, I had the usual round of vaccinations as was the norm in the UK at that time, namely: – measles, mumps, rubella vaccine (MMR), polio, whooping cough, diphtheria and tuberculosis, and possibly others?.

Throughout my life I've had many tetanus jabs, a yellow fever vaccination and a gammaglobulin vaccination before going to Nigeria and a couple of others which I can't recall the names of right now, and also the three Covid vaccinations here......

So far I've had no adverse reactions to all of the injections/vaccinations I've had and I think it's a bit late to start worrying about it now anyway, so listen to the science rather than those who would promote UV light and bleach, that's my advice.
