Sadly, mental illness regarding violence is hard to spot until it happens. Some keep this anger inside until they decide to let it out, and if he was bullied at that school, that's sometimes a motive. He killed his grandparents, not sure if they were his guardians but if so, where are the parents? Were they absent and or abusive, neglective also?

This theme has happened in the US a few times, and that hatred towards everything around ended up the same way, with the shooter killing themselves. That's a deep seated illness, usually coming from abuse and or neglect. Sometimes it's witnessing a parent's suicide, along with other trauma like one parent abusing the other, along with the children. When they look at the home situation, they'll also look at animal cruelty. One link explaining this.....https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mass-shootings-domestic-violence-abuse-connection-research/

Very sad. There are simply too many firearms circulating in Thailand, and access to them still appears far too easy. My thoughts are with everyone affected.

I also hope some expats who constantly focus on London's knife crime keep a sense of perspective. Thailand has suffered a number of appalling mass shootings in recent years, including the horrific 2022 Nong Bua Lamphu nursery massacre in which 24 young children were murdered, the 2020 Korat (Terminal 21) shopping mall massacre, the 2023 Siam Paragon shooting, and now yet another devastating attack at a school.

If Thailand's economic pressures continue to worsen, and if access to firearms is not brought under tighter control, there is a real risk that tragedies like these could become more frequent. I sincerely hope that doesn't happen.

Too many people with guns, period.☹️

The fact is, too many mentally ill people with access to guns. The majority of legal gun owners aren't shooting people besides the suicides. They have mental illnesses also but aren't killing others.

Many years ago unbeknown to me I was threatened with being shot at a nightclub in Phattalung where I was the only farang in a large wedding party enjoying a night out in the club.We had a senior cop in our group (who had got married) - he talked down some local apparently disrespected gangster (I was dancing with a bevy of girls in the party and tipping my friend the singer in the band) and we left. It was a salutary lesson of not showing off particularly in the deep south. One of the girls lived with her mum in an isolated property she had rifles and handguns and they knew how to use them if necessary.

Debsirin Nonthaburi shooting linked to alleged bullying

IMG_9540.png

Police in Nonthaburi say a pupil opened fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai on 7 August, leaving several teachers and students dead and injured.

Initial police inquiries indicate that the pupil allegedly targeted and threatened classmates after being repeatedly bullied, mocked and physically assaulted, according to authorities. When the teachers moved those students away, he then allegedly turned the gun on them..

What police say happened

The shooting took place at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district, Nonthaburi province, north-west of Bangkok.

Police said the suspect had lived with his grandparents since childhood after his parents separated. Officials reported that he was an avid gamer and had no known history of aggressive behaviour, describing him as a good student who had friends.

The firearm used in the attack was believed to belong to his grandfather. Investigators believe the boy took the gun from his grandfather, shot his grandparents, before bringing it to the school.

Ammunition found in the pupil's bag

Police found 34 unused rounds and two magazines in the suspect's bag.

The investigation has focused on claims that the pupil had faced regular harassment from fellow students, including teasing and physical abuse, which allegedly led to resentment before the attack.

Bullying is one major reason this happens, but killing his grandparents instead of just taking the gun and going to school means there was likely a severe problem at home also. In any event, he wanted to take away all his pain.

35 years ago pretty much the only people that even had guns were cops. It was a big ass deal for a Thai to have a firearm. You'd be more likely to see a tiger than a serious weapon.

The world is really starting to suck in a very huge way. Being here in Thailand we are sheltered from so much of the drama, expense and noise.

Time was...

Regarding the comments about bullying; it doesn't just happen at school but continues on social media at all hours. Quite a few suicides of youngsters have been linked to this. One of the reasons why Australia introduced the social media bans for the under 16's which, it would appear, a number of countries are considering doing something similar.

In 20 years Ive never heard of this- USA mirroring - so sad.

June 2003 — Pak Phanang school shooting, Nakhon Si Thammarat: 17-year-old Anatcha Boonkwan fatally shot two classmates and injured four others with a 9mm pistol, apparently over a personal dispute.

October 2022 — Uthai Sawan day-care shooting, Nong Bua Lamphu: A former police officer facing a drug charge burst into a day care center, killing dozens of preschoolers and teachers before fleeing and killing more people, with at least 36 people slain — the deadliest rampage in the nation’s history. The gunman, Panya Kamrap, 34, killed his wife and child before taking his own life; this ranks as the worst mass shooting by a sole perpetrator in Thai history.

February 11, 2026 — Patongprathankiriwat School, Hat Yai, Songkhla: An 18-year-old allegedly opened fire and briefly took students and teachers hostage, using a handgun stolen from police. The school’s director/teacher, Sasiphat Sinsamosorn, died from her injuries.

Death toll revised at Nonthaburi School shooting

IMG_9546.png

Authorities have now confirmed five teachers, including a deputy school director, have been confirmed dead after a male student opened fire at the Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district, Nonthaburi. Earlier reports that 3 pupils were killed are now reported as being wrongly reported by officials.

The student alleged to have carried out the shooting was also among the six people who died at the school, according to the latest report. Several teachers and students were also injured.

The discovery of the student's grandparents dead at his home brings the total number of deaths linked to the case to eight.

School death toll is six

The five staff members killed were identified by their roles as the school's deputy director, a teacher serving as a secretary outside an office, a guidance teacher, a Thai-language teacher and a mathematics teacher.

The sixth person confirmed dead at the school was the M3 student alleged to have been responsible for the attack.

How do people get a gun so young?? what is the motive to do such? Now it is not only the US were these things happen, although to have a gun is allowed, but in Thailand it is going to be the same. It is not the first shooting in a school with kids.. And that for a Buddhistic country. it is always said that Thailand is a safe country, but the last decade it has changed a lot.. Probably because the Governments are too busy with other things than taking care of the wellbeing of the population.. Why are there no help centers or educated workers for youth. psychologists, shelters etc, where kids and people cn go and talk when they need. It should be in the education curriculum in schools...

More important are the missed signs the shooters usually give off before they decide to go to schools and shoot others. The whys are usually the same things. Bullying, neglect and abuse, both at home and at the schools, or on social media from other classmates.

That's what needs to be done, but isn't as it should be. Like I mentioned, most school shooters give off signs before they act, which are missed or ignored, like the latest in Idaho. Mental illnesses are a leading cause of most shootings, especially these types, but they need to be aware of what children are saying, and not dismiss threats, bullying or anger. If it starts at the homes, it can happen before anyone knows what's going on with a child..................

Proven Alternative Prevention Strategies

1. Behavioral Threat Assessment Teams

The U.S. Secret Service and Department of Education emphasize that the most effective way to prevent violence is through early intervention. Multi-disciplinary teams—composed of administrators, mental health professionals, and law enforcement—evaluate students exhibiting troubling behavior. They intervene with supportive resources before the student turns to violence.

2. Anonymous Reporting Systems

The vast majority of school shooters communicate their intentions or show warning signs ahead of time. Programs like the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System allow students, parents, and teachers to report concerning behaviors or digital threats safely. This enables school officials to intercept crises before they escalate into violence.

3. School Climate and Mental Health Resources

Data indicates that a positive, inclusive school climate acts as a strong protective barrier. Increasing access to school psychologists, counselors, and social workers directly addresses student trauma, severe bullying, isolation, and mental health crises. This proactively defuses the pathways that lead to targeted violence.

Agree. It worries me that early in the news thread someone wrote 'teachers too strict'.

Is there any other known detail which supports the comment 'teachers too strict'.

That is almost never the case regarding school shooters. it's usually an undetected or ignored mental issue, bullying, abuse or neglect. Failing in school can be a final trigger, but only a minor additional reason this happens.

I could be wrong, but I think that was from a discussion (in Thai) on Thai TV this afternoon. They've been running the story (of course) all afternoon and doing various interviews. Another thing said there was the shooter had attempted to get a teacher's help over the bullying but the teacher wouldn't intervene. Again, this is all just talking heads and phone interviews that are all over the Thai TV and social media. So it's not fact at this point.

This is what I got when I Googled;

"Penalties

  • Illegal Possession: Unlicensed possession or smuggling of firearms carries heavy criminal penalties, ranging from 1 to 20 years in prison depending on the severity and weapon type. Foreigners caught with firearms face immediate arrest and swift legal prosecution."

There was more but Thailand is reasonably good in my opinion when in comes to legal security. But when it comes to corruption and greed, laws would be meaningless, especially if there is a dollar to be made!

Lucky the general population haven't yet discovered semi automatic weapons to carry out mass shootings...

Gun regulations need to be strict and enforced
