Thailand and DEA deepen cross-border drugs cooperation

Thailand's Narcotics Control Board police chief Pol Lt Gen Akarachai Kraithong led a delegation to the US Drug Enforcement Administration headquarters in Virginia from 12 to 14 August 2026, seeking closer cooperation against transnational drug networks.

The talks covered intelligence-sharing on major drug organisations operating in Thailand and the wider region, including investigations into finances and the use of digital currencies for money laundering.

Officials also discussed chemicals used in drug production, technological equipment to support investigations, and training programmes for officers under Thailand's Narcotics Suppression Bureau.

Focus on money trails and drug production

Pol Lt Gen Akarachai said drug-trafficking groups had developed into transnational criminal organisations, making financial investigations and the tracking of cryptocurrency increasingly important to enforcement work.

The Thai delegation and DEA officials exchanged operational knowledge and experience, with the aim of improving investigations and drug suppression work between Thailand and the United States.

Longstanding partnership

The visit followed a trip in July 2026 by His Excellency Sean K. O'Neill, the US Ambassador to Thailand, to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau headquarters.

Pol Lt Gen Akarachai said the DEA and US authorities had supported the bureau's work for more than 34 years. He described the Virginia meeting as an important opportunity for the Narcotics Suppression Bureau and Royal Thai Police to further strengthen anti-drug cooperation.

The two agencies cited previous joint work against drug networks. In 2025, Operation Sea Dragon resulted in the seizure of a cargo vessel carrying 5,000 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine in the South China Sea.

In June 2026, authorities also raided a factory producing and extracting substances from cannabis in Bangkok's Bang Bon district, arresting four Vietnamese nationals.

DEA officials indicated that they were ready to support Thai police with modern equipment and technology for investigations, case expansion and drug suppression. The agency is also preparing additional specialist training for Narcotics Suppression Bureau officers.
