Thailand expat urges Aussies to consider a cheaper life

Australian expat Jay Houston says he has cut his rent to a quarter of what he paid in Australia after moving to Thailand, and is now running an online business to help other Australians make the move.

Houston, 50, told 7News he can live what he describes as a luxury lifestyle for $1,800 a month, as rising living costs and pressure on household budgets prompt more Australians to consider working or living overseas.

The Thailand costs he cites

Speaking while sitting beside a pool at his condominium, Houston said: "This is my office, I'm in no hurry to leave it."

He said he lives in a "beautiful high-security condominium" with two pools, paying $630 a month in rent. His power bill is $60, water costs $4 and Wi-Fi costs $2, he said.

"I finish (work) by 2pm and then hit the beaches... I've got the best half of my life ahead of me," he told the broadcaster.

Houston also said his retirement visa with multiple exit permit, allows him to fly in and out of Thailand as often as he likes.

Business built around moving abroad

Houston has launched an online business offering guidance to Australians on insurance, visas and finding housing in Thailand.

He said the venture grew from his own difficult experience after first moving overseas. Houston selected the wrong medical insurance policy, an error he said was costly and almost killed him.

Thailand remains a popular base for foreign retirees, remote workers and long-term visitors, although the costs and paperwork involved can vary considerably according to location, accommodation choices and an individual's visa and healthcare needs.

Australian households under pressure

Recent Australian data has pointed to more people looking overseas for work and relief from the cost of living crisis.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showed the number of Australians holding more than one job passed one million for the first time. Full-time employment fell by 6,000 in August, while part-time employment increased by 39,000.

KPMG chief economist Brendan Rynne said the figures suggested Australia's economy was weakening.

"Households are still feeling the pinch of higher inflation," he said. "Households are scrambling to find more income to help cover their rising day-to-day expenses and future increases in mortgage payments."

If you come to live in Thailand....why would people not have health insurance? It's a must anywhere these days.

It often fails to pay up and may have exclusions which defeat the benefit. (And rather leave you out on a limb). An alternative is to self insure by saving the premiums, or be very selective about the insurance you select.

I would be embarrassed and feel unaccomplished if I was an older expat living here bragging about my cheap life. So many opportunities in western countries to make lots of money by age 50 to 60 life should be very easy here by that time.

Correct. However, the digital nomad area is colored gray.

He's not on a digital nomad visa, he's on a retirement visa.

If he wants / needs to work here, the correct visa is the digital nomad visa.

He wants the ease of the retirement visa, but to work on it, and it's illegal.

I take your point that youtubing is viewed as a grey area, and I have posted my opinion on that, but if you are going to go public, as this guy has, why would you risk being on the wrong visa?

You would have to ask him.

I am on a retirement visa. I recently sold an essay to Quadrant, an Australian literary magazine. Technically, I am working, as a freelance writer. I wrote the essay two months ago.

However, the money is earned outside Thailand, and has nothing to do with Thailand.

NB so whether he is on 1-year 90 day entry O or TM7 type one year retirement extension at age 50 he doesn't say. I guess to find out will cost you AUD18.

Yes, which you are not supposed to do on a retirement visa.

I am simply interpreting the letter of the law, not weighing up the chances of being caught, which in your case, is highly unlikely, but for the guy in the OP, he's painted a target on himself.

Not really an argument. A foreigner, high up in a multinational company in Bangkok, may insist on getting paid USD into his foreign bank account. He's still working here, even though his salary has nothing to do with Thailand.

The essay is published under a nom-de-plume.

The money is paid into an Australian bank account. Australian dollars.

It doesn't matter though, does it? Work is work, and a retirement visa says no working.

Can you clarify, are you suggesting one can legally do remote work here on a retirement visa? That's a yes or no.

I don't tink there will be any easy black or white answer to that.

What got my attention is here is a guy offering guidance to over 50 Australian males to relocate to Thailand and within his first sentences to Melbourne TV7 News he says that he is on a multiple entry retirement visa and running an online business like that is what is typically done when relocating.

My essay is about how i learned self-reliance, earning money as a caddie, and collecting scrap metal in the fifties. It's a look at a world which cannot exist in Australia today.

Quadrant is a right-wing magazine. I am enjoying the irony of the editors publishing an essay by someone left-wing.

I was unaware an approximately 35qm condo was luxury. A simple existence, yes. Nothing wrong with that. Just don’t call it luxury living.

Oh dear, he’s Australian. It could be luxury compared to a 1980 caravan parked at the bar in Walk About Creek sleeping on a bed of Roo Pelts.

Apparently there is a DTV visa which permits foreigners to run online businesses, application fee 10,000 baht, applied for outside Thailand. Gemini, Grok or Claude are your friends for the details.
