Thailand or Vietnam: Retirement choices

Thailand offers foreign retirees a clearer legal route to long-term residence than Vietnam, but Vietnam can cost considerably less for those able to manage more complicated visa arrangements. For people deciding where to spend retirement in Southeast Asia, the choice in 2026 often comes down to predictable paperwork and healthcare versus lower rent and daily spending.

Thailand has developed visa options specifically for retirement. The Non-Immigrant O visa allows foreigners aged 50 and above to stay for one or more years, when renewed, for retirement purposes.

Applicants generally need a valid passport, basic medical certificate and depending on initial visa, Thai-recognised health insurance. They must also show either 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account or a monthly income of 65,000 baht.

Vietnam has no retirement visa

Vietnam does not have a dedicated retirement visa, nor a visa category based only on a person's age, pension income or retirement status. Retirees seeking a long stay must instead pursue a Temporary Residence Card through eligible work, investment or family-tie routes, or use investment and family-reunion visas.

That can involve more legal complexity than a retirement move to Thailand. Investment-linked residence may require a compliant local company, along with continuing tax filings and audits, obligations that may not suit someone who has stopped working.

For foreigners who want an established route without relying on a job, investment or family sponsorship, Thailand's retirement visa framework is therefore a major practical advantage. Conditions, including financial evidence and insurance, should nevertheless be checked before applying.

Vietnam's advantage is everyday cost

Comparisons cited by Travelbinger put Vietnam around 20-30% cheaper than Thailand for a similar expat lifestyle. Rent is estimated to be roughly 40% lower on average.

Modern one-bedroom apartments are quoted at US$300-500 in Ho Chi Minh City and US$200-350 in Da Nang. Comparable rents are put at US$400-700 in Bangkok and US$350-550 in Chiang Mai.

A comfortable retirement budget is estimated at US$800-1,200 a month in Vietnam, compared with US$1,200-1,800 in Thailand. Annual estimates put comfortable expat spending at US$22,000-30,000 in Vietnam, against US$30,000-40,000 in Bangkok.

Street-food meals are estimated at US$1-3 in Vietnam and US$2-4 in Thailand, while restaurant dinners are US$5-12 and US$8-15 respectively. Domestic beer is also said to be cheaper in Vietnam.

The gap can narrow for retirees dependent on imported food and Western amenities, which can be significantly more expensive in Vietnam. Those happy with local food are likely to see the largest savings.

Healthcare, property and daily life

Thailand's established medical-tourism sector attracts more than two million medical tourists each year, including visitors from the United States, Australia, the Middle East and Europe. Its private hospital network includes JCI-accredited facilities, English-speaking staff and short waiting times.

Vietnam does not require health insurance for any visa category. Government figures put Vietnamese medical services at about 30-50% of the cost in Singapore or Thailand, but the country currently has four JCI-accredited hospitals. The health ministry aims for at least 15 internationally standard hospitals by 2030, including five public hospitals; retirees currently rely heavily on private hospitals in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Neither country lets foreigners buy land outright. Vietnam permits foreign apartment purchases on 50-year leasehold terms, while Thailand has condominium ownership rules for foreigners and an established rental market.

Thailand has also applied tax rules since 2024 to foreign-source income brought into the country in the year it is earned. Retirees moving money to Thailand may need advice on tax exposure and their home country's double-taxation treaty.

Thailand offers more established expat infrastructure, English signage, public transport and retirement services. Vietnam offers lower costs, but busier traffic, less consistent English outside major cities and a more energetic pace. For many retirees, the decision is whether those savings outweigh Thailand's clearer long-term setup.

@KhunHeineken So your life revolves around cheap beer & hookers. Got it.

And you think others, that may or may not do the same, but put down some roots, live in better housing, rather than a box apartment are stupid. You live a pretty lonely life, have to pay for company, after sitting around with your bar buds complaining about a country, you love so much, you won't leave .... classic.

If any or it is true. Really starting to wonder. How old are you ? What next, who can piss further 🙄

Starting to understand your sad life, and almost feel sorry for you.

Same here. Saying one loves Thailand isn't the correct verb as it's way too emotive. You can love one's homeland though. Despite not living there since 1977, I love Scotland, where I was born. I have lived in Thailand for the past 20 years (the previous 27 years here as itenerant oilfield trash, although great fun, doesn't count), but I don't love this country.

Without a retirement visa it is not worth even discussing Vietnam.

How is Thailand making it harder?

It isn't harder and you still have the normal crowd barking at the moon. Pathetic but hey if that is what excites you, AseanNow can definitely scratch that itch. Vietnam is the "new" hot destination and Thailand is the old exciting place that some skip.

As for retirees, Thailand has an easy and inexpensive process to maintain the visa vs most other countries. It would be great if we could just go to immigration upon arrival and tell them we planned on retiring and got a 5 years stamp and didn't have to inform the country where we were every 90 days but this isn't going to happen and the reason why should be obvious to even the mentally challenged but apparently not.

When comparing Thailand and Vietnam for retirement, how important is access to reliable healthcare, experienced doctors, and good hospitals in your decision? I think retirees should also consider how easily they can find specialists and seek a second medical opinion when needed. Platforms like MyoPlus can help people explore doctors, hospitals, and healthcare services based on their needs and location.

I lived in a city in central VN. The word is if a medical condition is serious go to Saigon. If it't very serious go to Bangkok.

Now you're even using the line I gave you, that I pinched off someone. Just curious if you actually know what it means 😂

For me, just something different, after 45 yrs in USA. Lower COL actually, as wanted to retire on what I already had, and not continue working for 21 more years till 66.

I've never had a problem with woman, actually like them and can talk to them. No need or desire for P4P. Rented one for a week, 1st visit to TH, a diving trip to Phuket, and was quite convenient. But that's my only experience with P4P.

One week thing was pretty cool, after the first awkward few hours. To P4P every time I wanted to have sex, doesn't interest me at all. Nothing about that is interesting to me. Especially the rates I here mentioned. I actually like talking to, and spending time with women.

No need to pay, as I learned a long time ago, women enjoy sex just as much as myself ... go figure. Easy to find like minded gals.

Carnival Magic in Phuket holds nine Guinness World Records—the most for any single attraction in Thailand—including the world's longest single-chassis parade float, the largest outdoor chandelier, and the world's tallest popcorn machine.

They are impressive world records.

The world's largest pop corn machine. 😂 😂

The 9 Guinness World Records

  • Most lights used in a permanent light and sound show: Utilizing over 1.6 million lights in its illumination display.

  • World's longest single-chassis parade float: Featured during the grand indoor theater spectacle.

  • Largest LED structure: A massive display containing hundreds of thousands of individual LED lights.

  • Largest LED sculpture (supported): Intricately scaled glowing artistic creations across the park.

  • World's largest popcorn machine: A fully functional, towering novelty machine.

  • Largest papier-mâché sculpture (supported): Enormous artisanal character builds.

  • Largest outdoor chandelier: A colossal centerpiece glowing within the grounds.

  • Tallest proscenium arch (stage frame): Towering over the main performance theater.

  • Most LED lights on a commercial van: Decorated transport vehicles integrated into the park's vibrant theme.

You do know Carnival Magic is a company. It's a business, it's not infrastructure.

If they are the sort of records you want to discuss, then Vietnam has them as well.

No, people's opinion that I respect said don't bother, especially since I like driving O&A. Owning & driving is an issue, along with landslides during rainy season. Something Doyle pointed out in his recent visit there, first driving he got stuck behind 3, and took hours till cleared, no thanks.

Internet sucks also, and that info from folks that have been there. NO VISA, so not even a consideration and never would be. Y'all say TH could change at any time and we can't stay here. Well, VN, you already have no way to stay there ... NO VISA

If you are married to a Viet, or have Viet kids a 5 year VISA cost $50.

If I'd been moving to SEA today, I'd probably choose to move there and marry a local as it's a lot easier to stay than Thailand.
