Thailand rain warning: Bangkok and East face flood risk

The Thai Meteorological Department has issued its 12th weather warning, saying heavy to very heavy rain will continue across parts of Thailand until late Sunday, September 27.

Bangkok and surrounding provinces, the Central region and the East are among the areas facing persistent downpours, with risks of flash flooding and temporary road inundation. Rain is forecast to start easing from September 28.

The warning, issued at 5pm on Saturday, September 26, follows an active low-pressure area over the Central region and Bangkok which is moving along a monsoon trough. A rather strong southwest monsoon is also affecting the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand.

Provinces facing the heaviest rain

For September 27, Tak and Kamphaeng Phet remain under a very-heavy-rain warning, along with Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi in the Central region, including Bangkok and surrounding provinces. Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chanthaburi and Trat are also included.

Heavy rain is forecast in Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phichit and Phetchabun; Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima and Buri Ram; and several central provinces including Ayutthaya, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram. Phuket is among southern provinces expected to see heavy rain on Sunday.

Travel and sea warnings remain in force

The TMD has urged people in foothill communities, areas near waterways and low-lying locations to watch for flooding caused by heavy and accumulated rainfall.

Travellers should take particular care on roads prone to repeated flooding. Visitors with domestic flights, transfers or onward ferry connections may wish to check conditions with their carrier or hotel before setting out.

Winds and waves remain rather strong in both the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand. Waves in the upper Gulf and upper Andaman Sea are forecast at two to three metres, exceeding three metres in thunderstorms.

In the lower Gulf and lower Andaman Sea, waves are expected to reach about two metres and exceed two metres during storms. Mariners are advised to avoid stormy waters, while small boats in the upper Gulf and upper Andaman Sea should stay ashore.
