Bangkok immigration police have arrested a 29-year-old Ugandan former footballer accused of overstaying and offering sexual services through a dating application used by foreign gay men.
The man, identified only as Mr M, was detained at a hotel in central Bangkok after Immigration Division 1 officers traced what they described as online advertisements for services to his accommodation. Police said he will face legal proceedings before being deported.
Police say dating profile advertised services
The operation was ordered by Immigration Bureau commissioner Pol Lt Gen Phanumas Boonyalak and his deputies, Pol Maj Gen Pratchaya Prasansuk and Pol Maj Gen Phanthana Nuchnarot.
Immigration Division 1 commander Pol Maj Gen Prasat Khemmaprasit, his deputy Pol Col Kittisak Kongkiatsiri, and investigation superintendent Pol Col Polsit Suttiat also directed the operation. Investigators were led by Pol Lt Col Suthirat Thirasawat, Pol Lt Col Thaweesap Chaiyaphum and Pol Lt Col Suriyo Chaiyot.
Police said officers went undercover on a prominent dating app which shows users' locations. They found a profile attributed to Mr M, which allegedly displayed photographs promoting his muscular physique and explicit images in connection with the sale of sexual services.
According to police, an undercover officer contacted the man and learned that he would travel to clients' rooms, mainly at luxury condominiums in central Bangkok.
Police said the quoted starting price was 2,500 baht for travelling to a client or providing companionship, while sexual services started at 4,000 baht, with higher prices possible by agreement.
Hotel search led to overstay arrest
Officers later established that Mr M was staying at a central Bangkok hotel and went to check his room. They said he was found inside and that a large number of condoms were seized as evidence.
A check of his travel documents found that his permission to remain in Thailand had expired, police said.
Mr M reportedly admitted that he had originally entered Thailand as a footballer. After his visa expired and he no longer had a club, he allegedly turned to providing sexual services to foreign men through the dating app to support himself.
Immigration police said they would continue expanding their investigation into networks allegedly using online platforms to conceal prostitution and other offences. Members of the public can report suspected immigration offences through the Immigration Bureau's 24-hour hotline, 1178.
