SAMUI: -- More than 150 police and soldiers led by the provincial chief swung into action on Koh Samui yesterday under orders to rid the holiday island of the scourge of hard drugs.

The drugs and crime suppression crackdown was ahead of the "Samui Festival 2017" due to start Thursday.

With chief Apichart Bunsrirot up front the officers and local officials fanned out to target two communities where drugs abound.

These were the Ban Hua Thanon area in Maret sub-district and Soi Phoonsawat in Bo Phut.

In the first location they arrested Saneh Topulat, 47, who was taking heroin while in his underpants, reported Daily News.

They also caught 26 year old Wichai Dechorat with a bag of "ice (methamphetamine) hidden under his TV in the bedroom.

The exact quantity of the haul was not reported.

Seven youths were detained on unspecified drugs charges and 10 tested positive for drugs with the telltale purple urine test.

Whatever happened, or didn't happen, in Soi Phoonsawat was not mentioned in the story.

Chief Apichart said his men were acting under orders from the government and National Police to suppress the drugs business in the tourist areas ahead of the Samui Festival that runs from September 7 to 11.

What a dramatic and colourful headline!

I am quite happy to see the cops ridding the island of heroin and 'ice' as it is terrible stuff, but the story begs a question. If they already knew of two areas "where drugs abound", why wouldn't that be dealt with on a daily basis? Slow and steady law-enforcement might yield better, more sustained results.

This Massive operation netted how many tons of "Hard Drugs"?

What a waste of time and resources/ money .?

Not a waste of time at all...... IMHO

But....... only a very small step in the right direction..........

More than any other reason, this was probably ordered so 'Thailand' could get one more headline in the news about how hard they are trying..... When all of us here know the cops won't go out and do any real work unless pushed, and then not very often.........

My Thai wife has 2 of those cops in her family so I can see it up close.......

I agree, but for whom!? Pouncing on law breakers straight away like that is not very 'Thai'; you must have noticed police disregarding motorcycle riders and pillion passengers not wearing helmets and any number of motoring offences unless there's a road-block set up to nab people who have or may have committed a particular offence - they know where they are with that, it's controlled and it fits in with their way of doing things i.e. to give suspects/offenders enough rope to hang themselves otherwise the courts would be inundated, the police would be working flat out, the crime figures would soar, the police would have to be paid more and eventually, heaven forbid, corruption may have to cease!

This is Thailand, don't think he's going to find the dragon in his underpants.

He may have a tiny dragon hidden there you just do not know

150 police officers and soldiers turn up with two small timers best. Priceless.
