Our well which is about 12 meters deep,gives us a good supply of clean water all year round, to keep it smelling fresh, I mix a small amount of cholrine with water and throw it down about every 2 weeks.

The water is at its lowest level in april, then some local guys come along and scrub the sides all the way down and dig out the bottom, getting rid of any crap, the top of the well is covered but not sealed.

I admit the smell of cholrine is a bit better than some things cooking round the back sometimes.

What do you do? all comments welcome

My well is a pipe about 120mm diameter, 30m deep. For the first few months it had a bit of a sulphurous smell first thing in the morning - perhaps caused by iron in the water. That smell has gone now though and the water is quite clean and fresh (although I do not drink it). I am close to the Mae Nam Mun so my water table is, I imagine, quite high all year round.

I perform no maintenance at all. Once it got a bit brown and dirty for a couple of days, but cleared up by itself.

We're on city water. Have an undergound cistern made of concrete rings piled on top of each other. The top is also covered but was not not sealed. The first cleanup I did, I could see daylight around the top lid so I sealed it all up with opaque silicone. Once every 6 months, I turn off the main 's valve and use up most of the water inside, then empty the remaining water with a small pump on a rope around the garden. Down the ladder and scrub side walls and bottom until there is zero sludge left. It's 3 years old now and it seems that some hairline cracks have sealed with minerals leaking in from groundwater (especially from the rainy season) over time. The water doesn't smell that often anymore. The city water is actually quite dirty in our tub compared to still water that has been pumped from the tank.

I also throw in some Haiter bleach from time to time but have been thinking of buying pool chlorine that I could stick in a pierced plastic container that would float around in the tank.
