BANGKOK: -- Industry Minister Uttama Savanayana said on Wednesday that he expects new investment from Japanese investors in the first five years of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) development project to be at least Bt500 billion.

Uttama took 300 Japanese investors and that nation’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Hiroshige Seko, to visit EEC investment sites as part of a campaign to promote the potential of the three eastern coast provinces of Rayong, Chon Buri and Chachoengsao.

The Bt500 billion investment is expected to be related to a new generation of automobile, aviation, robotics, smart electronic, medical wellness services, petrochemical and biochemical industries, he said.

Uttama said that over first five months of setting up EEC Office in March, investors had applied for investment privileges for 160 projects worth an estimated Bt23.4 billion. Of this amount, Bt14.2 billion was directed to the 10 targeted industries promoted by the government.

Seko led a party of 570 investors to Thailand between September 11 and 13 in order to seek investment opportunities here and in the wider Asean area.
