Kep and Pursat provinces were granted Asean environmental awards in Brunei on Tuesday evening, a first for Cambodia. According to the Environment Ministry, a committee consisting of all Asean member countries evaluated and chose Kep for the Asean Environmentally Sustainable Cities Award, while Pursat was granted a certificate recognising its sustainability of clean water at the 14th meeting of Asean environment ministers.

An award ceremony was held on Tuesday after the meeting, with the participation of Cambodian Environment Minister Say Samal. “This is a proud moment for the Cambodian people and the Royal Government of Cambodia, because Cambodia’s provinces have received the first-ever Asean environmental award,” the ministry said in a statement.

Pursat Governor Mao Thonin said that he was very proud. Gov Thonin added that provincial leaders will host a ceremony to celebrate the award at Koh Sampov Meas Island Park tonight, including fireworks and at least 1,000 participants.
