BANGKOK: -- A new species of trapdoor spiders, which has been named “Mae Wong trapdoor spider” has been discovered by a team of researchers, lecturers and students in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, of Chulalongkorn University.

Natapot Warrit, an adviser to the research team, said Mae Wong trapdoor spider (Liphistius maewongensis) is one of the 96 species of trapdoor spiders discovered in the world, and the 33rd to have been discovered in Thailand.

Mr Natapot said not more than 100 of Mae Wong trapdoor spiders were found at the Mae Wong National Park only.  Their nests are built on steep earth cliff more than 1,000 metres above the mean sea level.

These spiders can be deadly can't they ? Or only some of the species ?

I recall in Aus. when I was a lad, the Trap Door, Red Back and infamous Funnel Web spiders were the ones to keep away from ! ... but as kids, we'd 'tap-tap' around the trap door of the nest and wait for the little bugger to pop out and see what's going on ...

Who cares?  Thai's will only eat them anyway

Well done guys; seems like a genuine achievement for a change; rather than one of those seemingly endless series of (re)inventions we keep hearing about.

Yeah, right! I guess your mother just told you that out of concern for the small pain a bite from these spiders can give. They are definately not deadly. Not even for small children and old sick people.

The bite of the Trapdoor Spider is of low risk (non toxic) to humans. It is a non-aggressive spider and is usually timid, however it may stand up and present its fangs if harassed. Trapdoor Spiders rarely bite, however, if they do so, it can be very painful.

Brown Trapdoor Spiders are often mistaken for Funnel-web spiders, however, their bites are not dangerous. Local pain and swelling may occur. Sigillate Trapdoor Spider bites may also cause local pain and swelling. There is one report of unspecified ‘severe effects’ from a Sigillate Trapdoor Spider bite.

Problem solved! Question answered! Next one in the line. Google helps you with many thing today.

Well there you go ... thanks for that ... figured they couldn't have been that bad or they wouldn't have mentioned in the news item ..... or would they ?

Is the one in the photo having a nice swim... or have they drowned it?
