The actualization of such projects will be the death of Pattaya and have few benefits for Thai people. Golf courses and luxury hotels and the like just destroy communities and turn the locals into low paid wages slaves serving a tourist elite. Pattaya is a large community with people benefiting from a degree of wealth and independence that international vanity projects will rob from them.

I think some have docked in Laem Chabang but it's not a very attractive area for cruise ships, in my opinion.

Can anchor off shore, if bumpy see can have the Larn island between the ship and the bumps.

 

I think they are completely correct that Pattaya could be a hub for leisure boating. Done correctly Pattaya could attract most of the boats from Singapore, East Malaysia and Phuket during the monsoon season on the Andaman side. This coincides with the low season in Pattaya and could give a needed boost to tourism here at that time. The local interest of boat ownership would also be boosted. A good yachting location always attracts a lot of high value tourists.

There are a number of things that have to be done to achieve this:

Water quality must be improved with a new treatment plant and better control of garbage management.

There is only one marina, Ocean Marina, in Pattaya. This is a very good marina but also very expensive. It will set you back 10,000 to 15,000 Baht per month to park a speed boat there. The marina at Bali Hai should be completely re-constructed and expanded with berths for resident pleasure boats and with guest berths. The tourist speed boats should not occupy this prime location. There should be more marinas developed in Wong Amat, Rayong , Koh Samet, Chantaburi and Koh Chang.

If you keep your boat on land on a trailer there are only two ramps in Jomtien where you can launch the boat, these ramps are severely restricted. Due to design and lack of dredging you can only launch a boat at mid to high tide. There is also a restriction on moving boats on trailers on public roads from 09:00 to 15:00. These two restrictions limit your access to the sea severely and you may not be able to use the boat in over a month. These ramps must be re-constructed to make a launch possible at any tide condition and only the hundreds of commercial speed boats should have limited access to public roads.

The only place where you can get fuel for a boat at the moment is at Ocean Marina, all other fueling must be done using jerry cans. There should be dock side fueling facilities along the coast.

There are several islands offshore Pattaya with beautiful beaches. The problem is that with the exemption of koh Larn and koh Sak they belong to the Navy. There is very limited access to the navy island and they are completely off limits several times a months due to live armament exercises.  The navy should give access to these islands and allow development of beach clubs and overnight facilities to give the boating community destinations to go to. Koh Larn and Koh Sak is completely roped off and controlled by the local tourist speed boats and it’s nearly impossible to access the beaches on these islands. If there is nowhere to go for boat owners there will be no boat owners

To drive a boat in Thailand you need a helmsman’s license and an engineer license. The authorities should develop a Pleasure Boat License with a fixed theoretical and practical curriculum that would allow locals and foreigners to get a license to use and drive a pleasure boat.

Most of these things will probably never happen but you can always hope.

I agree regarding the engineers license, that is why I proposed a separate pleasure boat license for small speed boats, sailing yachts and jet-skies. The people driving commercial speed boats should need a more stringent license including first help like CPR.

Just in case anyone hasn't noticed, Jomptien, away from the disastrous Pattaya clone Beach Rd project is going ahead with gazillions of baht worth of new buildings and projects.

No, we don't want another high end project ruining fun city. Develop Jomptien for all the nobs, but stay away from Pattaya. They can have all the new malls as well.

BTW, the lighthouse Marina is exactly where all the tourist speedboats should go.
