rooster59
Chiang Mai district chief doesn't see the funny side of bar's ironic protest Image: Daily News In a clear case of officialdom not appreciating irony the Chiang Mai district chief has asked police to prosecute a bar for insulting his men. The Yaksa bar in Santitham Plaza was shut down recently after a raid mounted over underage drinking and other irregularities in the serving of alcohol. But after the popular nightspot was shut for five years someone has plastered signs all over his bar and installed an ironic wreath outside. The signs claim that they were shut down for selling two bottles of beer. For this crime the punishment was five years. The signs also make light of the fact that they do not sell the drug Ya Ba. Chiang Mai district chief Saranyu Meethongkham was not amused. He hotfooted it to Chang Pheuak police to call for the arrest of those responsible for the signs saying they are an insult to the civil servants of his department. He claimed the notion that two bottles of beer caused the closure is nonsense. Yaksa was shut for good reason, he said. colinneil
Probably shut down for not paying a large part of the takings to certain officials.
darksidedog
Maybe if the punishment fit the crime a little more appropriately, such sarcasm wouldn't be needed. Closed for 5 years for one incident, where no drugs were found is seriously draconian. Maybe the pissed off District chief should take note of the reaction and be a bit more level headed in the future. If over a five year period you closed every bar that had an underage drinker, there would be nowhere left open to get a drink.

Deez
What is even more ridiculous is, It is the landlord that is punished, not the owner of the business. I have no doubt the business owner opened up again nearby. Seen it many times

Stargeezr
It seems like a case of someone who is thin skinned and has a bit of egg on his oh so important face. Do not forget that the Thai face is the most important thing to a Thai person. Ow, ow my face. Oh now you must pay for shaming my face. keithathome
Thankyou for that. I passed this bar and thought it was a special offer. (Yes I don't read Thai)
thaibeachlovers
C M is a fun banned zone. Any enjoyment is immediately squelched. Strange thing is many farangs there think that's great, though no one is forcing them to go anywhere near a bar. Dogs and mangers comes to mind.
