30 day visa 15 day visa

Featured Replies

Newbie here in a bit of a jam and apparently out to lunch.

I am a Canadian that has a 2.5 month tourist trip planned to SE Asia. The first 28 days are in Thailand I then fly to Vietnam for 22 days.

I mistakenly thought I would be granted another 30 day visa when flying back from Vietnam but believe I will only be granted 15 days.

If this correct, do I stay the 15 days in Thailand and then fly to Siem Reap for 3 days return by air and will then be granted another 15 day tourist visa.

Any suggestions or advise is very much appreciated.

why do you believe you only get 15 days? As far  as anything I've ever heard, its 30 days but it isnt a visa, its a visa exemption

You will be granted 30 days each time you enter Thailand visa exempt. Should you wish to stay more than 30 days, you have the option of a 30-day extension available at an immigration office in Thailand on payment of 1,900 baht (about 70 CAD).

I read somewhere do not recall where at the moment that if I fly back to Thailand from a domestic country (Vietnam) that I only am granted a 15 day visa.

Is this incorrect?

I have a call into the Thai Consulate for clarification but getting through is a b*tch.

There used to be different rules for visa exempt entries when entering by land. These allowed only 15 days when entering visa exempt by land (but actually did not apply to G7 countries including Canada who still received 30 days). This has changed, and all nationalities now receive 30 days, whether entering by air or by land. Entering by air, there was never any difference depending on the length of your flight.

For future reference, do not treat Thai consulates as the expert on anything other than the rules for issuing visas at their location. They are notorious for giving incorrect advice on immigration matters. You should note that consulates come under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Immigration Bureau comes under another branch of government.

Thanks for the info guys much appreciated.

What still concerns me is the reference to international and nothing stated about domestic arrival (Vietnam).

My second leg of the journey will be a domestic arrival from Vietnam to Thailand.

Is there anything in print re: domestic arrivals being granted 30 day visa

From the link above it only references international??

http://www.thaiembassy.com/thailand/changes-visa-exempt.php

" They are granted to stay a maximum of 30 days if they are entering Thailand via an international airport."

That is a commercial website that contains a lot of duff information.

You will get 30 days on entry.

This can be extended by a further 30 days at immigration.

Thanks for the suggestion price looks decent and it certainly does seem out of the way. May look for something closer in until at least I get oriented.

Vietnam is a different country from Thailand (otherwise, no immigration formalities would be needed). As such, a flight from Vietnam to Thailand is an international flight.

The rules for visa exempt entry when arriving in Thailand by air are unchanged for several years. You receive a 30-day permission to stay. You also, now, always receive 30 days when arriving via a land border, though you can only do this visa exempt twice per calendar year.

Where you do take a domestic flight within Thailand, you are not required to pass through immigration.

Very very unlikely but bear in mind it's possible you may be asked to show 20,000 baht or equiv' in dollars/US/Canadian etc.when you arrive. Credit cards, bank books etc are not accepted, only major currencies accepted.

Will only happen in general to very frequent visitors but why not be prepared.

Some airlines will want to see a ticket out of Thailand if you are flying without a visa.

Easy to get your ducks in row before you fly.
