MORE THAN 100 students will compete in the national round of the NJ Spelling Bee 2017, the country’s most famous English spelling competition.

They are all outstanding participants of the four regional rounds, which were held over the past two months. Champions from the regional rounds are: Patcharapat Chaijaroen (Chiang Mai University Demonstration School); Tanapat Kaewkrajok (Benjamarachutit School in Nakhon Si Thammarat); Temchon Punthasane (Buriram Pitthayakhom School); and Kritin Eakthunyasakul (Triam Udom Suksa School).

The Grand National Final Competition will take place at Rangsit University on November 11.

Explaining why he thought the essence of the NJ Spelling Bee – vocabulary – was important, Patcharapat, the winner from the North, said, “I believe that to listen, speak, read, or write English fluently, a good vocabulary is essential.”

Added Temchon from the Northeast: “If we don’t know the words, we probably won’t understand the sentences or conversations.”

And Kritin from the Central region chimed in: “English vocabulary is the basis of all English learning. Before we can grasp the content or structure of the sentences, we have to know the meaning of each word first.”

“If we don’t know the words, we don’t know anything further.”

The winner from the South, Tanapat, agreed: “Vocabulary is the key to English communication. Some English words are pronounced the same or nearly the same but spelled differently.”
