BPH: Great service or inefficient?

Sorry for the length of this but no other way to explain.

I had a small cyst on my leg that needed attention.

I went online Saturday to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital site and made and appt.

No problem, they sent me an email for my appt. today.

Walked in this morning greeted my a nice lady who directed me to a desk.  She walked me to another lady who checked my appt.,

then called someone to escort me to building C.

Walked into building C and contacted the guy at the desk to the right as you enter.

He wrote something on a piece of paper, and escorted me to the Dermatology front desk and asked me to sit down.

A few minutes later a woman comes up to me and confirms my name.

Then another woman comes up and takes me back to see the Doctor.  Nice guy no problems says he will remove it.

I then wait outside his office and another lady nicely dressed comes up and tells me how much it will be.

Then another woman comes up and has me sign a consent form.

Then another woman comes up and confirms my information and gets my phone number and email.

Then the nurse comes ................

On and on, you get my drift??

I am not complaining my cyst was eventually removed, but it all seemed very very odd all these people in the loop.  They all were nice no issues there.

But, I do not understand the management of this unless they just like to employ a lots of people with limited job responsibilities.

They may be required to employ X amount of staff. Enables the government to say there is zero unemployment in Thailand.

You only have to go to the big DIY shops to see the same thing.

Co-incidentally, I have an appointment with Dr Anna tomorrow in the dermatology dept regarding leg problems. (Small world) I will count the number of people with whom I interface.

I think that's it. All Thai businesses and offices seem to be way overstaffed with people who have no authority and very little to do.

My condo building office could easily be run by just one person, yet we have four or five (or maybe even more that I dont know about).

What's important is you were able to get an appointment with, I would bet, not having to wait too many days and, again I would bet, the charge was probably less than what it would have been in a country like the USA with high medical costs.  I remember going to the doctor in the USA to have one small mole removed.  Just one and it only took a few minutes.   If I remember correctly, it cost me over $400 and when I was reviewing the charges to see why it cost so much I discovered I was even charged to sit on the exam table while the mole was removed!   That was a number of years ago.  Probably now they have added a charge to sit in the waiting room and maybe another to walk on the floor.

BHP prides itself on short wait times, something that is the envy of American hospitals. They have many foreign patients and as the OP noted rolled out the red carpet for him. They have a large staff of greeters and interpreters that personally escort foreign patients from station to station. I wouldn't complain about apparent inefficiency, just sit back and enjoy your champagne at beer prices.

Always found BPH a fine (if pricey choice). I dropped a bottle of beer one night whilst loading the fridge, a splinter cut an artery in my leg and I started squirting blood everywhere.

The GF drove me straight to BPH and I was treated by surgeons immediately.

I thank the staff and BUPA who paid for it. The Thai's aren't all thick, they saved my life.

BPH: Great service or inefficient?

Both. We tend to think in binary here. As somebody pointed out, try Banglamung instead.

If the place were very crowded, it would be more understandable. But it's never crowded.

Confirmation of your name by different staff members is a good idea, though, in the case of English names. My own last name, Schwarzenegger, is easy for Thais to get wrong, so double checking is in order.

Me, I wouldn't have a cyst removed at BPH. They quoted me B6000 for that procedure years ago. They really value those operating rooms. Went instead to Queen Savang Vadhana Memorial, public hsp in Sriracha, and they did it for B300. Very nice about it, too. A local clinic quoted me B800.

I went to see her two weeks ago for a check up. First time and like the OP I was amazed at the no. of people involved/standing around doing not very much.

I politely refused the BP check and was surprised they did not insist. Dr Anna was very quick and I guess including the examination I was with her for no more than 15 minutes tops. 1500 baht doctor fee plus 220 "other" costs.

You're welcomed to try Banglamung hospital to see if 'efficient' service with minimum staff interaction is any good

Fortunately there are levels between BPH and Banglamung (public) hospital.

Went this morning and saw Dr Anna. She told me she had only been over to the USA recently to see her family.

Only saw three women - one at reception, the one who led me to Dr Anna's room and the cashier.

What did amaze me is that I parked in the top open air car park, almost next to Dermatology.  A guy with a 10 seater buggy insisted on giving me a lift, but I politely refused. Said I might be old but I can walk 30 yards!. He was quite  nice about it but disappointed.
