Govt to allow foreign temps in fishing industry to address current shortage

BANGKOK, 3 October 2017 (NNT) - The Office of the Prime Minister has issued an announcement allowing for foreign workers to temporarily remain in Thailand to work in the fishing industry, provided they have the appropriate documentation. The announcement was published in the Royal Government Gazette on September 28th to address the sector's labor shortage.

Director-General of the Department of Fisheries Adisorn Promthep said the announcement stipulates that foreign laborers from Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Myanmar ages 18 and above who wish to work in the fishing industry but do not have work permits can register at designated centers in 22 provinces by October 31st. Employers who wish to hire additional laborers can register until October 10th, in order for the department to create an employer database with which laborers can apply.

The employers must then prepare an employment contract, employee medical records, and a crew member list between October 1st and November 15th. Foreign laborers with proper work permits will be able to apply beyond the deadline, as they are legally allowed to work in Thailand.

Owners of ships weighing less than 30 gross registered tonnes that employ foreign workers must create a crew member list within 120 days of the new law's promulgation.

Here we go again the slave trade is back in operation.

Are there laws that stipulate working conditions, medical treatment in the event of injury and minimum pay ?   Maybe this is why they need the submarines .

I just wonder how they can come in to unload and there is no crew on the boat.  You think this would get someone's attention.
