  • My passport expires early December. I'm applying for new passport this week and if everything goes well I will receive my new passport by the end of the month.

  • My extension of my Non-Immigrant B visa ends on the same day as my passport.

  • I will not leave the country before the end of the year.

So my question is, when I get my passport by the end of this month, do I need to transfer my 'extension of stay stamp' to my new passport or won't this be necessary?

Can I use both my passports (old one with the visa/extensions and my new blank passport) when I go get my new extension of stay at the end of November (about one month after receiving new passport)?

You could wait until you apply for your extension of stay.

The only problem you might have by waiting would be if you needed to leave the country.

You mean wait with applying for a new passport?
The problem with that is that it normally takes 3 weeks, but can take up to 8 weeks. With my passport expiring early December, this week is pretty much the latest I can go to apply for it.

Or did you mean I can wait and use both passports to get my new extension of stay, no need to transfer old stamp to new passport? As long as I don't have to leave the country before getting new passport/stamp, which I won't.

Believe he means you can do both process in the same visit.

In any event your current extension of stay and a notation of the visa it was issued on will have to be entered into your new passport prior to obtaining another extension of stay.  So expect a bit more time and the form to transfer will also have to be filled out.

That is what I meant. But they will transfer your stamps to your new passport before they do the extension.

Thank you guys, much appreciated!

Seems like I will need a letter from my embassy that will confirm my change of passport, so they can transfer those stamps.

If you are a UK PP holder they will give you the letter together with your new PP, it is a pre printed letter that you fill your own details into

This was what happened when I applied for mine 18 months ago, hopefully nothing has changed as I need to apply again before the end of the year

MK9.

Went to immigration today, new passport, visa runs out next week.

Have to have old visa transferred to new passport and then can apply for renewal..

Have to return Monday to do get passport back and do renewal. Oh, and she wasn't interested in embassy letter about new passport, had to fill out a form saying exactly the same . Hope this helps.

Your visa is not transferred - only a notation of the visa (not an actual visa) and the extension of stay are entered into the new passport - that is what you wrote that form for. They become more interested in Embassy letter if you do not have one.

Excuse my ignorance but is there a point to your reply?

Key visa, the lady in immigration and Ubonjoe on another thread used the term transferred , is there a difference to your term, notation?  the information required on the form was the same as was on the embassy letter.  She didn't even look at it just handed it back with the visa renewals and new passport copies.

The problem is that visa and extension of stay terms/rules can be very confusing if not made specific and a visa is not transferred so if you have a valid visa in an old passport (such as a multi entry non immigrant O) you do not visit immigration but present both passports on exit/entry and get stamped in on the new passport.  You must present the old passport containing the valid visa to use it each time.  Transferred term is for the extension of stay - for the visa just the relevant information is transferred/notated on the new passport - it is not a valid visa..

Thanks Lopburi.

So I will only need my new passport because I will have a new visa in it next wee, but if there was ,say, 6 months left on it I would have to present both ?

I have a friend who will be in that position so will pass that on, assuming my understanding is correct.

You only needed to transfer because you had an extension of stay (or applying for one) - if you were here on a normal visa entry you could just leave using both passports (they would put an entry on exit to explain in new passport).  Believe there is still one land crossing that will refer you back to their (closeby) main immigration office regardless - but most places do not want to bother with transfers for visa entry.
