PATTAYA: -- It was a seriously bad day yesterday for several people after Pattaya police were called to a Jomtien condominium as a Cambodian man scaled a tree threatening to kill himself.

The Cambodian man - named as Wo, 34 - was stressed out after his mates posted his picture on Facebook saying he was a drug dealer.

But though his life was saved the rescue ended in farce as one of his saviors fell out of the tree fortunately half onto an airbag that softened his landing.

Pattaya station chief Apichai Krobpetch sent his men and the fire department to the View Talay 5 Condominium amid reports that a man had scaled a 30 meter high tree and was threatening to kill himself.

They found Wo up the Teen Pet (White Cheesewood) tree outside the well known condo.

Many people gathered to follow the drama including several foreigners and their Thai girlfriends.

Wo refused to come down so a man went up in an elevator basket to fetch him. But that didn't work either.

So a rescuer climbed up to try to persuade him to come down.

Wo decided to climb down himself and the all seemed well as he reached the ground - only for his would be rescuer to fall out of the tree after he stepped on a branch that would not support his weight.

He fortunately was saved from serious injury by the airbag though another person was hit by the branch.

One person was injured.

Wo was led away by police after explaining to reporters that he had been stressed out after his friends played a prank on him.

While he was sleeping they took his picture and posted on Facebook that he was a drug dealer who couldn't find work. The stress drove him to enter the condominium grounds and scale the tree to try and kill himself.

He admitted that he had tried drugs but police found that he had no drugs offences.

Instead they charged him with illegal entry into Thailand and prepared to send him back to Cambodia.
