What could be going on in the laundry to cause an explosion? Could this have been a meth lab?

If it is, it's not a normal meth lab. You want stability when you're mixing toxic chemicals. A dryer would put a twist on that objective.

Maybe the cause was the same as this Phoenix laundromat explosion back in March of this year.

"...reports indicate a gas leak occurred behind the dryers. A spark from the dryers being turned on caused the building to explode which, in turn, created a fire..."

Why, does meth manufacture involve explosives?  Why suggest the laundry was in the drug business?

Meth manufacture requires flammable solvents which can catch fire.

In a laboratory, chemical reactions are usually carried out in a fume cupboard which has an extractor fan to safely remove harmful solvents. In a back street lab, luxuries such as an expensive fume cupboard are likely to be absent.

Having said that, there's no evidence yet of what actually caused the blast.

So called 'dry cleaning' uses non-flammable chemical solvents to tumble garments and remove stains and dirt after which they are ventilated to drive off solvent fumes and dry the garments.

It is not unknown in some countries for flammable solvents to be deliberately or accidentally substituted creating a potentaiil explosive atmosphere.

Of course, it couldn't happen in Thailand due to stringent safety measures and enforcement of regulations......
