Thai passport for teenager living in LOS

Featured Replies

residency related topics in Thailand -- my son, 13, who lives in LOS with his mother, I live in London, is applying to renew his Thai passport and is facing onerous requests for documentation. I can understand the need to protect children but the list is baffling and much I think is lost in translation. Apparently I have to provide a power of attorney documents I think they mean guardianship order showing that my wife has the ability to make decisions for the child. Power of attorney would mean that my wife has the ability to make decisions about my life, my affairs would be placed in her hands, and this I think has been lost in translation. Other documents include a copy of my passport and an original letter stating that I am the father of the child, quite who provides the original is at present unclear.

Can anyone help to clear away the fog and make this process as painless as possible.

Your wife cannot get a passport for your son without your permission.

You will need to go to the Thai Embassy in London to get a letter of consent certified/witnessed. You'll find the info about the consent form on the Embassy website.

Thanks.  It makes sense that my wife cannot obtain a passport without the father's permission. There appears to be a lack of information on the Embassy website although there is a list of downloadable forms in Thai including one listed as Power of Attorney.

It's not power of attorney that you need.

In consular services you should find "Letter of consent for child passport application".

It's a form you complete at the embassy. They witness you signing it and put there official stamp. I think it costs £10.

You'll find the form in the downloads. It's download form 6. "Consent form".

Depends. OP mentions guardianship papers, and if she has official guardianship his documentation is not required. They may still ask though.

You will need to complete this letter of consent and have it notarized at the embassy. http://supibee.thaiembassyuk.org.uk/annie/file/consent2.pdf

If near one of the consulates they may also be able to notarize it.

Will they accept this form for a passport application within Thailand, the form appears to be giving consent for a Child to travel overseas?

It is listed under passports on the download page of the embassy website (from 6). http://thaiembassyuk.org.uk/en/download-forms

There is also one here on the department of consular affairs site. http://www.consular.go.th/main/contents/files/services-20120630-195748-510034.pdf

What ever UbonJoe, tells you I go along with it.  I've been obtaining passport for years for my Thai son, advantage I've been there for all his applications. Each time it is a pain in the butt, one would think about the first one everything would be in the computer but each expiration and renewal it is like do it again the first time.

Last, month we apply for a passport for his girlfriend and she is 19 just short of 20, both parents had to be there with all the documentation. In the application process they said the Birth certificate didn't match her I.D. there was a spelling mistake so they couldn't process the application because it wasn't her even when both parents were there?

Finally, I stepped in and ask can be speak to the manager,  after much discussion they decided to issue the Passport and told her to go down to the Ampur and get a new I.D. to match everything else.  Simple right but not here?

I had to to follow my daughter and mum (my GF) in person, when she applied for a Thai passport (she's born in Thailand), at a previous attempt they first tried without me being there in person, bus was refused application.

Same procedure when my daughter applied for passport from my Scandinavian home country at the embassy in Bangkok, her Thai mum also needed to be present in person.

Yes.

When I went through this process last year I was told by the embassy that it could only be done at the embassy.

Yes.

I only asked as that form is actually a form that gives one of the parents consent to take a child overseas, or at least the modified wording in English states this.

So far, I've seen 3 different versions of consent forms if you include that one.

Knowing how inflexible Thai bureaucracy can be, then it would pay to be absolutely sure, especially as this form has to be seemingly notarised in the UK prior to the Embassy.

This form from a Kiwi based consulate, different format again.

Yes, I understand that the form isn't clear, but it is the correct form required by the passport office in Thailand.

I don't suppose the format of the consent letter is that important. As long as it's provided by, and notarised by, consular services I expect it would be accepted by the passport office.

"an original letter stating that I am the father of the child, quite who provides the original is at present unclear"

A letter of confirmation is also required. Quite what a letter of confirmation of fatherhood is, and who creates such a document is unclear. Does anyone have experience of this?

The form to which Ubonjoe has given you a link is this document with which you confirm that you are the child's father. Look at the text: "I, ... the father of ..."

As with this form you give your consent for your child to travel abroad and as the child needs a passport to travel abroad you are, with this form, also giving your consent for your child to obtain a passport.

The convoluted structure of the language of Thai bureaucracy.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

Please note that you must sign the form in the presence of the consular official and present your passport as proof of identity.

You only need the consent form.

You should get confirmation if you email the embassy using the following email address. It's the address I used last year to get the information for my daughters passport.

Who is saying those are needed.

The requirements for applying for a passport for those under the age of 20 is here in Thai.

 http://www.consular.go.th/main/contents/images/text_editor/files/Manual PP/under 20 update13-6-60.pdf

It has sample forms shown. The consent form shown appears to about the same as the one posted on department of consular affairs site.
