Bangkok not seriously affected by flooding: DDPM

BANGKOK, 13 October 2017 (NNT) – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) held a meeting with other agencies to closely monitor weather conditions and set guidelines toward assistance for flood victims and assured Bangkok will not be seriously affected by flooding.

DDPM Director-General Chayapol Titisak headed the multi-agency meeting on the weather conditions and water situation, and guidelines for operations to help flood victims.

The DDPM chief said dams are now holding large volumes of water, while the country is having high precipitations, thus causing flooding in some areas.

He dismissed rumors that Thailand would be hit by three more storms over the next two weeks, saying the information remained unconfirmed by the Metereological Department, and that his agency needed a one-week time to plan the water management in the face of a potential monsoon during on 15-16 October.

He said that the imminent flooding will not seriously affect Bangkok and its peripheral areas, while the authorities in charge of the provinces below Chao Phraya dam were instructed to fully brace for the flooding, especially Ayutthaya where many historical sites are to be protected.

Following the depression which had affected some 41,000 households, Chao Phraya dam will continue to release water at the rate of 2,600 cubic meters per second for another week, causing the water level to increase by a meter.

Rama VI dam is now maintaining the water release rate at 600 cubic meters per second, causing the water level in areas below the dam near Pasak River and in Ayutthaya to raise by 0.2 meter.

He reassured that the flood retention area currently has 30-40 percent of its full capacity to retain more floodwater.
