Police are investigating the murder of an assistant to a village chief in Chiang Rai's Wiang Kaen district on Thursday.

Chalee Phuditsakultham, 32, assistant to the village chief in Ban Huai Khu (Moo 8), was shot dead in his Toyota pick-up truck as he drove three members of his family to the village at around 4.30pm. They were on their way back from a shopping trip in Thoeng district.

A gunman hiding in roadside bushes fired bullets through the driver’s door, killing Chalee instantly while a stray bullet hit his daughter in the shoulder.

Local police inspected the scene immediately afterwards and took away seven used AK-47 bullets.

Wiang Kaen superintendent Pol Colonel Passakorn Napikul led a team of forensic officers to inspect the scene on Friday morning. He said their initial suspicions were that the incident was the result of a personal conflict.

If authorities try to do something about illegal possession and use of illegal guns they realise that there is no way they can do anything about illegal guns.

Something cosmetic must be done, so the easiest step is taking away the guns from a group that have no way to protest this unfair treatment and are powerless anyway.

In another topic they are banning expats from having guns.

it is so much easier to amend the law to ban foreign gun ownership and then look like as if they have actually done some gun control, as opposed to restricting everyone (Thais included) from owning guns - now that would be unpopular and that's one thing the government doesn't want to be.

Yea, but what if that Australian British nut bag had access to an AK rather than a machete???

People like that screw things up for the rest of us.

Yes well we should all get in touch wiht our Expat frineds o/s and let the know not to come here and attack people with machetes for fear of getting a bad reputation

And for what reason should you come to Thailand feeling that you need to have a gun. If I felt like that, then I wouldn´t stay. Unfair about guns!, So unfair. I guess you must be american, they usually sounds like that.

Illegal guns is always available in every country, but here it seems like somebody backed up by higher forces made the hit.

80,000,000 people 3 shootings, I'd say that was pretty impressive - don't ever go to the US if the figures here scare you !
