EGAT confirms no water discharge from Bhumibol and Sirikit dams

BANGKOK, 17 October 2017 (NNT) – The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has assured it has complied with water situation analyzing subcommittee resolution to not discharge water from Bhumibol and Sirikit dams. 

EGAT Hydro Power Plant Assistant Governor Natthawut Chaemchaeng has dismissed a rumor on social media that the authority is discharging an additional 100 million cubic meters of water a day from Bhumibol Dam which could cause floods in Bangkok, asserting that EGAT has stopped releases from Bhumibol and Sirikit dams since October 7 in accordance with a resolution from the water situation analyzing subcommittee to help alleviate flooding in the Chao Phraya River basin. He said relevant authorities have also been instructed to constantly monitor the situation at the two dams. 

Water volume in Bhumibol dam as of October 14 is at 9.238 billion cubic meters or 69 percent of capacity, while the water volume in Sirikit Dam is 7.968 billion cubic meters or 84 percent of capacity. Both dams can still retain more water for consumption and farming during the dry season next year. 

Governor Natthawut has asked the public not to fall victim to false rumors and to follow real-time water information via water.egat.co.th and the EGAT Water application, which also provides live broadcasts from each dam.
