A 30-year-old Nakhon Phanom man has been arrested in Nakhon Ratchasima in possession of 508 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine or “ice”, with a reported street value of Bt1 billion, national police chief Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda said on Tuesday.

Thinnakorn Khomsing was spotted walking suspiciously with another man near a temple in Bua Yai district, where they had ditched the pick-up truck that police were seeking after it was reported to have fled a police checkpoint earlier in the morning.

Police arrested Thinnakorn near the local train station but his accomplice, identified only by nickname Bee, escaped. The drugs were retrieved from the abandoned truck.

Thinnakorn told police he had been paid just Bt20,000 to take the drugs to an unknown location. The man who had hired him had orddered him to drive from one place to another and then receive further instructions, he said.

Deputy police commissioner Pol General Chalermkiat Srivorakarn said drugs had traditionally been smuggled in the North but this changed after police had increased their interception of drug smugglers in that region.

Gangs had now started using the Northeast as their main smuggling routes for transporting drugs to southern Thailand and Malaysia.

The drugs are then distributed to other destinations, including Australia and Taiwan, where such a large quantity of “ice” could be worth even more than the estimated Bt1 billion, Chalermkiat said.

Good work from the cops....it will avoid a bit of human madness under influence,  for a short time...

Another thumbs up to the police for hunting the peddlars and the transporters in place of pulling over farangs and making them drug test pee on the streets with threats of  hefty "fines" !!

smuggled that amount of drugs for only 20k. someone is telling porkies or the guy is seriously lacking in the brain department. maybe too much of that meth

Country of origin anybody?

This story is just not right...

What person who has 1 billion baht worth meth would hand it off to 2 jackasses in a pickup unless they are so rich that 1 billion baht is  just  pocket change...

The Police might also be counting more than a few bags of sugar as meth to up the total....

Why would you transport it down like that ?....why not have a moving company pick up your wooden box all sealed up and send it on its way to a apartment you have just rented out under a false name.

Easy to know when the truck leaves for BKK...if you want follow it down.

I have never heard of a police road block stopping a transport company and going through the entire contents of their cargo.

.

I guess there are 2  guy's that can ponder on that for the next 30 years or so.

What always comes into my head is the claim 1 million 2 million in value.

When drugs are seized they become of no value because they will be destroyed or should be.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to state X kilograms of ice have been seized and will cost X thousand to destroy them?

Just sayin'

Not sure some petrol and a big fire ( stay away from the smoke) would cost much - 200 baht ?

"was spotted walking suspiciously with another man",hand in hand,or a la John Cleese.

Maybe he thought it was just regular ice...??...;)

Sounds comforting that they found a person to arrest.

1bn baht... that's going to hurt someones pocket further up the chain !!

You get about 300 a day to deliver regular ice... Not 20,000

Starting to have more problems in our area, with Yabba / ice ,last week 3 monks and a side kick from local village were busted selling drugs, any bust and removal of this insidious scourge on society, is welcomed, demand and use must be so great to keep seeing the large busts happening,

how many couriers make it through to their destination, is the question,

Again serious reason to legalize all drugs and  have a lower  tax tariff  on less harmful drugs and better education on what each drug does.

How do you know the payment was for 1 day - it might have been an up front payment for 3 years frame agreement...??...;)

Street value never goes up the chain.

If you were using a mule to transport 1 billion baht's worth of ice, would you tell them what they were carrying?

Right, and that's way he may have thought it was an urgent delivery of regular ice where the payment of 20k cash should as well cover potential speed tickets, fees for not stopping at police point, extra use of gas and night shift allowance and so on...;)

Hear yea, but there is an 'estimated' go-go value

i wonder how much of it will actually be destroyed and and how much will end up back in the supply chain .........
