You are talking about 800k Baht in the bank, I presume. What bank pays 7% interest?

If you can find me one, I'll deposit half my cash there. I have a bridge in Sydney Harbor to sell, too.

  • The difference between 2% and 7% on 800k in the bank is the price of a new scooter or a week's holiday in Vietnam. Every year.  I don't drink every day, so maybe my perspective is different to yours.

Every little helps, and IMHO it's better off in my pocket than in theirs. That's the reason I'm a fan of peer-to-peer lending.

I tend to agree with the  point  of your post but there are a lot of fellows in Thailand who live on very little so the "small stuff" may matter to them.

I use Bangkok Bank 12-month fixed deposit, giving an annual interest rate of 1.5% (still valid a few days ago) before deduction of 15% mandatory withholding tax.

I agree with that and even bought a house with a loan from a friend but here I'd rather have the peace of mind that 800,000 cash in the bank savings account brings Immigration and it is worth the small amount it costs me in lost interest.

A long time ago maybe........now the 5 yr term deposit rate is about 4.3% on average in NZ, with reputable institutions.

Some shares will pay good dividends if that's your bag.

I never heard of one not taking a term deposit account.  I think you are wrong.  If not please specify which ones don't take term deposits.

Some officers in some offices (notably ones in places where they dont see many farangs) have not accepted TDs. It does vary though. It has been reported on here many times.

It certainly is not a problem in Jomtien.

Fair enough. I've swapped over to the 65K /month system, which has freed up the 800,000 for other purposes.

Which office? I never believe things unless the basics are answered.  Who what where when and so on.
