Banana stalk carvings transferred to Royal Pyre

Palace and local master artisans on Tuesday night finished the expertly hand-carved banana stalks, featuring vegetables and flowers, that will decorate the outside of the Royal Pyre – Phra Chittakathan, as it is known in Thai – and prevent the flames from spreading outwards.

Transferred from Phra Tamnak Suankularb School in the Grand Palace, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Sirindhorn's carved works are among those being installed on top of the Royal Pyre on Wednesday morning in time for the Royal Cremation of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Thursday, October 26.

 

For more than 500 years, since the Ayutthaya era, a temporary crematorium has been constructed in the middle of the city for the funerals of deceased kings, queens and other high-ranking royals.

 

Its function is not just to pay the highest honours to the beloved monarch but also to preserve traditions.

 

The tradition of vegetable carving on the royal pyre has been preserved in this final tribute.

Royally bestowed pilot flame for royal cremation handed out to district chiefs across nation

 

 

CHIANG RAI, 25th October 2017 (NNT) – Provinces across the nation have given royally bestowed pilot flames to district offices for safe keeping ahead of their use at royal crematorium replicas during the royal cremation ceremony of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej tomorrow. 

Chiang Rai held a ceremony to hand the flames to 18 district chiefs. It took place at the province’s central hall before an image of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn. The flames will light sandalwood flowers at the province’s flower laying venues except in its Muang district, which has a replica of the royal crematorium. 

The chiefs of Petchabun’s 10 districts received their flames from the provincial governor. They intend to keep the flames at sandalwood flower laying venues until they are to be used on Thursday. 

In Nan province, the handover ceremony was held at Wat Phratatchahaeng and saw 15 district chiefs receive the royally bestowed flames. 

The flame was setup before an image of His Majesty the King at Nakhon Panom’s provincial hall, with chiefs from 11 of the province’s districts receiving their flames from the central royally bestowed flame. 

Pichit province’s governor chose Wat Ta Luang to host the flame dispersal ceremony, which saw the handing of the flame to 12 district chiefs. 

The flames were previously received by provincial governors in a ceremony held at the Ministry of the Interior chaired by the Prime Minister.

Ceremonial grounds closed to accommodate religious ceremony

All nine screening points providing entry to the Royal Cremation Ceremony were temporary closed until 8pm on Wednesday, when a religious ceremony in the Grand Palace was due to be completed, the joint command centre for the Royal Cremation Ceremony reported on Wednesday.

 

Authorities also said at a daily press conference at the media centre in Thammasat University that people should not be worried about the temporary closure, because the ceremonial grounds at Sanam Luang could accommodate many more people.

 

Deputy Commander of Metropolitan Police Pol Maj-General Jirasan Kaewsangaek said people who had queued to enter the Royal Cremation Ceremony would have to wait a bit longer, as entrances to the grounds would be closed until about 8pm.

 

“We understand that people are wanting to get into the Royal Cremation Ceremony, but we have to spare the area for this evening’s religious ceremony, which the Royal Family will also attend, so some of the area inside the ceremonial grounds is still not open to the public,” Jirasan said.

 

“Due to the restriction in some areas, officers have to close all screening points but we will open again right after the area is prepared to facilitate the people.”

 

He added that the people in the queue would definitely be able to enter the venue, because the area could facilitate up to 110,000 people and only 20,000 had turned up by Wednesday morning.

US Embassy pays online respects to late King

The US Embassy in Bangkok has changed the cover photo of its Facebook page and website to a photo of diplomats and staff after they paid their respects to HM the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand at Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall.

The photos, which depicted US Ambassador Glynn Davies and his staff, read “In remembrance of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 1927-2016”.

 

The move honoured the late monarch who passed away in October last year.

 

On the embassy’s Facebook page, US Embassy Bangkok, a message from Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross read “On the solemn occasion of the cremation ceremony for His Late Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, I extend to the Thai people my profound esteem”.

 

He said he was deeply moved by the Thai people’s outpouring of love and gratitude for the late King during his recent visit to Thailand.

 

“His legacy as the father of the US-Thai alliance, within which trade and commerce play essential roles, will continue to benefit the great people of both America and Thailand as we enter a third century of friendly relations.”

 

The embassy’s website, th.usembassy.gov, also is displaying stories about the late Thai King on its homepage, including a video clip entitled “Remember”, which the embassy produced to honour King Bhumibol.

 

Also on the page is a statement from US President Donald Trump saying that Secretary of Defence James Mattis will lead the US delegation as Trump’s special envoy to attend the Royal Ceremony for the late Thai King.
