PM encourages appropriateness as nation prepares for Loy Krathong

BANGKOK, 1st November 2017 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has asked for public cooperation in ensuring this year’s Loy Krathong festival takes place with appropriateness as well as security.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha has asked that Loy Krathong this year, which is taking place on November 3, be observed with appropriate behavior and care, urging citizens to make make sure no damage or danger takes place and for all participants to uphold the traditions of the celebration. He reminded the public that floating lanterns require permission before being sent aloft.

Provinces across the country are ready for the holiday, such as in Chachoengsao, which has dispatched security personnel to conduct a crime sweep and to watch over all centers of merriment. They are on the lookout for weapons, explosives, drugs and wanted individuals. The province is celebrating the holiday until November 10.

Deputy Commander of the Royal Thai Police, Pol Gen Chalermkiat Sriworakan and Acting Commander of the Metropolitan Police, Pol Lt Gen Chanthep Sesavej have set up a joint force of police and soldiers as well as police canines to suppress any criminal activities during the festival in Bangkok. They reiterated that fireworks are not permitted and that any use will incur punishment.

Well, that should 'bring happiness' to the people.  :saai:

Just how much criminal activity is occurs at this festival?

Compared to the drunken road carnage during Songkran, I've always found Loy Kratong to be a very peaceful event.

will they ever stop telling people what to do, how to dress, how to behave and what to believe?

It's not about criminal activity, it's all about control.

No. They have well and truly got a taste for it now.

Yeah! No stealing, corruption or lying.

Must be great to be able to do whatever you like and have the gall to tell others they can't. God like.

On the other hand it makes life easier. I don't have to think about which shirt to wear, which places to go to for a drink in the evening, whether to buy fireworks or not.

I agree with you. It is amazing how much this government dictates to the people.

Do as I say. Not as I do.

No.

I'm so happy for him now that he found the time to take care of the important issues in this country.

Maybe they can tell the police not to be corrupt and let them do all the corruption

Dear Mr. PM

will you shut up already,please?!

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha has asked that Loy Krathong this year, which is taking place on November 3, be observed with appropriate behaviour and care . . .

There'll be appropriate behaviour alright . . . there'll be much drunkenness, many fireworks and people just getting killed for no good reason. As for weapons, explosives, drugs and wanted individuals, what else would you expect these flying squads to find in places of merriment? . . . no change there, then.

I hope this government explains what it means as, most of the local population do not understand simple things, like , saying thank-you and please, let alone abiding by the rules of the road.

Appropriateness, might be another word for Thainess.............and we all know what that means ................Me........me .........me .

Interesting you say that. Our local plod have not done a licence / helmet sting in God knows how long. I am just wondering if they were instructed to send the fine money upstairs so they simply quit bothering...

You never know in this place  But there has been lots of kickboxing on tv lately maybe they are to busy with that

Wondering what this country did without the PM always "encouraging", "suggesting" or "forbidding" basics which have been around Thailand for hundreds of years!

Got totally spoiled in the past year

"He reminded the public that floating lanterns require permission before being sent aloft. "

Available from every BiB for a mere 200baht.

I wonder if he will lift the ban on more than 3 twerks for LK?

what does that mean ?! 'appropriateness ? as judged by exactly whom ?

Well the flood waters he managed to retain throughout the country will help to make sufficient areas to celebrate the 2017 festival appropriately

I wonder will smoking be allowed at the times and places where these explosives and other dangerous inflammable and gaseous materials are to be ignited. Or will smoking booths be provided?

'Appropriateness' as a part of 'Thainess', I guess, so, not very appropriate according to accepted criteria in the rest of 'the other world', outside of microcosm Thailand, but do they care, being told/taught for many generations they are the best, the bravest, the strongest, the most clever ones... Sigh! All means have always been found good here to avoid the 'plebs' to grow 'balls', to think for their own, crititical thinking a total no-go.

To me, it seems the sabre draggers in power are well in-line with that despicable 'logic', (ab-)using it for their own profit, but what to do with such an under-educated, 'adapted', population? Let them vote for populists bribing them, non-taxpayers, to secure their exclusive access to the trough of the State's coffers?

What is the 'least bad' for Thais and Thailand? As far as I am aware of, there is a majority (but would they come out to vote, and for whom?) rather in favour of the present 'stability' under military control, than of the abuses of the corrupting and corrupted Shins and their vampires' tribe.

No, don't say a word about 'democracy' when a whole population is seen merrily readying itself to celebrate its second most important, ...pagan(!), rite of the year!

I LOVE Thais (no, not the Chinese/a bit Thai bloodsuckers holding this country in their firm grip), but are they, really, truly, brave, or just forever meek and tame, like 'the system' has made them, and wants, at all cost, to keep them...?

USA told me what to do from the time I was born and would not let me go naked in public even when it was very hot and tried to convince me that fidelity and vanilla sex were good things.  I would submit to you that your bias accepts your own country telling you what to do and how to dress and what to believe but you are to ethnocentric to understand another culture may want to do the same thing.

I remember just having to walk a few steps to put our krathongs to water, in a flooded neighbourhood... I wanted to do it for my old mother, Farang as I, as a folkloristic event, while my, Thai, wife was not interested at all for herself, having, thankfully, outgrown the mumbo-jumbo stuff, and since my mother's gone we make sure to stay at home to avoid accidents, not even thinking about putting a krathong on the water of our pond...
