Actually, I believe he is staying at the Phuping Palace on Doi Suthep, his winter residence.

Don't think so, his entourage traveled in the wrong direction last night, more like the airport route.

Hmm! My wife is a licensed tour guide so she belongs to circle of tour guides group on Line which is fed with tourist-related information from various sources. One of those feeds announced that Phuping will be closed to tourists between 6 and 10 due the royal visit. Faced with a choice of flying backwards and forwards to Bangkok every day for four days, versus staying at a palace on Doi Suthep, I know which I would choose, but that's just me. I might add that historically he has stayed at Four Seasons in Mae Rim for the same event.

2 ambulances with sirens and lights flashing caught up in total gridlock, unable to get through, not one policeman seen, anywhere.

Note to self. avoid CM city next November

Decoys and misinformation to keep everyone guessing with no real information available to us Plebs unless you have info directly from the Royal Party/household.

HM may be doing a mixture of both or neither of them and something totally different. It is called security.  None of us knows, it is pure speculation on our part.
