No chair? No problem on Jomtien Beach

No chair? No problem on Jomtien Beach

image.png

PATTAYA:-- Despite the assertions of chair and umbrella vendors, Jomtien Beach was buzzing with activity on “no chair Wednesday”.

Many families, both foreign and Thai, brought their own beach mats and foldable chairs to enjoy the sun and sea. Others played beach volleyball, swam or ran around.

There has been a debate whether the no beach chair and umbrella days benefit the community, with the majority of vendors claiming no one comes out on Wednesdays when they don’t have shade.

On Nov. 1, at least, they were wrong. Most Thais don’t rent chairs anyway, nor do families getting together for picnics. So the beach is offering something for everyone during any one week.

Jomtien area offers a lot of shops as well, which is convenient for those who wish to have cold drinks or food from nearby restaurants. There also now is plenty of parking on Jomtien, making bringing chairs and mats easier.

No problem tourist always carry umbrellas and chairs in their suitcase when on holiday....

Is this serious?  I count maybe 15 people.  Yes I can believe there was plenty of parking available (most Thai work on Wednesday).

Utter rubbish.

Go to Bang Saen on a Wednesday and the beach is rammed with Thais sitting on deckchairs.

Buzzing? Looks vacated apart from maybe a dozen people.  A few brave ones in the water must be tourists who arent aware of the garbage, toxins and raw sewage they are swimming in

just need to clamp down on those stupid <deleted> at night with their lowered pick ups, blasting out 1000 decibals of music, on Beach Road, despite there being signs up saying no loud music, oh oh, well of course we know no one takes a blind bit of notice

If you stay over 14 days it makes sense to buy your own chair and umbrella. Every day you stay longer you start making a profit compared to paying 100 Baht a day for a mere rental....Plus you can flog it off on the next disgruntled tourist for a reasonable price, leaving you with a minor profit and a happy feeling you got one over on the mafia.

Just saying.

15 people as you say in the photo......a few dozen more where standing behind and looking through the cameramans lens and taking "selfies",all returned to lounge on the beach after he had gone......... you ever hear the term "the camera never lies".......BS..:clap2:

There's a lot more to the beach than can be shown in one photo of a small area.

I agree with Lopburi3. You can see a fair bit of the beach in that direction and its fair to assume it would be the same the other way. "... buzzing..." isn't an adjective I would use to describe the scene. Crowed? No. Packed? No. Plenty? No. Smattering? Yes. A few? Yes. Quite a few? No.  Not many? Yes. Etc.

Beaches are dead on those days but some folks like dead beaches..Bad for business surely.

If you choose to run a business in a tourist area, you're aware of the holidays and seasons and plan accordingly so that you make as much, or perhaps a lot more, than you would running the same or other business in a non-tourist area. If not, then you leave. So?

No-one is choosing to close on Wednesdays. They have been ordered to close, not for any rational reason, just to show who is boss .... not that anyone is impressed.

Talk of a mafia amongst beach operators is laughable.

If u run a business 7 days out of a week and then all of a sudden u may only be open 2 days out of a week how that makes sense,

OK, point taken! :jap:

Never known a country like this in the world that could make a simple task such as a day at the beach so complicated!

When you're in the business of ridicule, as is the case with so many TV posters, assumption certainly is not fair.

Yes a trip back to the dark ages when cavemen took holidays.

Although bringing your own umbrella, chair or even lying on your own towel used to get you abused in the past.

Bang Saen is popular with Thais from Bangkok to Pattaya and south of there.

It has no Wednesday ristrictions. Simple thing to do is head there if you want

shade and service.

And  gaze out at the mud flat if the tide is out

Who cares about the sea and mud scenery,  think about the now back in your home

country and enjoy the sea air. Also there are usually several cute young Thai women in

the crowd. Use your eyes and iminagination. Enjoy your day,  That is why Bang Saen can

be a good distraction on a Wednesday

Geezer

I moved back to Jomtien a month ago. I've been amazed how the beach area with no chairs is heavily populated and the deck chairs are essentially vacant.
