3) Background on the international day

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – 25th November (http://www.un.org/en/events/endviolenceday/) seeks to raise awareness around one of the most widespread and persistent human rights violations that plagues every corner of our world, and aims to mobilize change. Gender inequality and gender-based persecution are expansive problems that include multiple forms of abuse. Education and empowerment have long been acknowledged as the most effective ways to counter the cultural norms that are often the fostering factors of the abuse.

4) Chiang Khong and Gender Based Violence

Chiang Khong in located in the north of Chiang Rai province, bordering Laos PDR. It is home to 9 distinct ethnic minority groups, migrant workers and stateless people. Through our Women for Change project, Center For Girls has conducted participatory research and found that Gender Based Violence is a major problem affecting local women in Chiang Khong. In rural, highland communities gender-inequality and the subsequent abuse experienced by women and girls can manifest itself in physical, sexual, emotional, and financial abuse. Symptoms of which are clear to see as many women and girls are left behind, physically abused, forced to drop out of school to support their families, forced/sold into child marriage, or become victims of sexual exploitation. It is for these reasons that a continued and exhaustive effort to campaign for the rights and empowerment of women is critical to the social development of the region.

5) About Center for Girls

Center for Girls (CFG) is a grassroots non-profit organization established in 1997 by Nunnaree Luangmoi. Based in Chiang Khong, CFG works to protect the rights of women, children, and vulnerable people through sustainable, community-based projects. Through these projects, Center for Girls helps to lift up and empower people in the community, and also to create reporting networks to identify and provide assistance to victims of violence and exploitation. Center for Girls also provides emergency support for identified cases, and referral to relevant services (legal, health care, psychological support etc.)

6) About the Women for Change Project

Women for Change, a Chiang Khong-wide initiative to empower women by focusing on increasing knowledge and awareness of issues surrounding gender equality and women’s rights. It also aims to enhance women’s confidence in their collective power to make positive changes in their own lives and their communities. Upon completion of the program, women become members of the Women for Change Network. This Network is designed as a resource to seek advice, report instances of GBV, and raise awareness of the issues women face long after the project is finished.
