New taxes, changing consumer habits set to shake up food & drink sector

By The Nation

New retail legislation and developments in consumer purchasing habits are set to impact activity in Thailand’s retail sector, particularly the food and drink segment, according to research by UK-based Oxford Business Group.

Notable among these developments is a levy, which came into force in mid-September, targeting soft drinks containing sugar.

A tax of 20-30 per cent levied on the suggested retail price of sugary drinks is intended to encourage Thais to consume less sugar in order to improve their health, as well as prompt producers to cut sugar content in their products.

Also in force since mid-September is a 45-per-cent duty on liquor based on its value, in addition to a tax of 50 per cent based on its level of alcohol.

The levels will be gradually increased over a six-year period.

Tax is tax and benefits Governments even if it is under the guise of better health !

I always bring a bottle from elsewhere.  Singapore, Malaysia and now Thailand are part of a NO fun corridor.

Thai really believe those fairytales ???

So then, why the f has the price of Green Tea gone up from 25 thb to 30 thb!????? This is a 500ml bottle for crying out loud.

There is Zero Sugar in the Ito en Green Tea. Being a big fan of it and since it is the Only Decent Green Tea out there, this doesn't make any sense. 25 thb for a 500ml bottle was already quite expensive.

Who writes this rubbish ???? Beer still selling

Have they have even been to Thailand?

The poor benefit as they can't afford it; the rich can afford it so there is no problem that I can see.
