Two suspects killed, three police injured in stolen pickup chase

By The Nation

A man and his wife were killed and three policemen were injured after a 20-kilometre chase in Uthai Thani ended in a crash on Monday.

Police said they were chasing a pickup truck at 10.30pm when it lost control and crashed into a roadside power pole on Nong Chang-Lan Sak road in Ban Din Daeng village in Tambon Thun Na Ngam in Uthai Thani's Lan Sak district.

The police car involved in the pursuit swerved to avoid the collision and hit a roadside tree, injuring the three policemen inside.

The two suspects who died were identified as Pongsak Roikaew, 48, and his wife, Supaporn Thongsri, 37.

The impact hurled Pongsak's body through the windshield.

The three policemen were identified as Pol Capt Surapoj Kruathanakul, who was severely injured, Pol Senior Sgt Maj Damrong Butsing and Pol Cpl Phudit Phattarakhunanon.

The three officers pursued the pickup from Khao Bang Kraek district after they were informed that it had been stolen.

Police also found 15 methamphetamine pills in the pickup.

Real pro policemen keep distance and other district would also be warned to make a roadblock, but I am dreaming again, this is Thailand, there are no real pro policemen here. All this for a stolen car.....

So much loss of life and injury for so little.

earlier this year there was a documentary about the met police in london, their training and high skill level as drivers, as well as the professional way they went about their work, was impressive. by comparison the guys here are complete clowns. which would be funny if it didnt result in incidents like the one above, and the general carnage on the roads which is partly contributed to by the RTP who refuse, for whatever reason, to do their job.

when the chase starts, who knows what the offence is, it could be murder or a kidnapping, in hind site its easy to say 'all this for a stolen car' , 'real' police always keep the car they are chasing in sight.

The issue is quite sad for all, as mainly the police were plainly doing their job,  but with a certain lack of proper training.
