Police and Sangha officials in Sadao on the Malaysian border conducted a raid netting bent monks and female food traders.

The traders were paying the monks to give them food and other items given to them on their alms rounds.

The traders were then selling the goods back to real monks.

After many genuine monks got sick from eating the days old curry in plastic bags the locals got fed up and called in the authorities.

One of the female traders had a ten baht (200,000) gold necklace around her neck - proof of the lucrative trade in reselling alms donations, reported Thai Rath.

A total of five monks were arrested in the Ban Dan Nork area of Sadao - they were found in possession of Thai baht and Malaysian Ringgit.

Three were defrocked while another two were banished from the area.

Police warned three traders about the activity and recorded their names. One called Wonwat Damkhong, 46, was wearing a ten baht gold necklace.

We could do with a few 'positive' monk stories, to counteract the stories about the numerous bad ones.

Like we have with the 'good' taxi drivers, finding and returning a wallets to their passengers, the day after a 'bad' one has been involved in a machete road rage incident !
