His Majesty the King on Friday sent a gift of royal soil and wreath for the funeral of late Surin Pitsuwan, former foreign minister and secretary general of Asean as international community recognised and remembered his achievement for Thailand and the region.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Valayalaksana and Her Royal Highness Princess Somsavali also sent their wreaths and condolence message to his family.

Surin, 68, died of an acute heart attack on Thursday. As a Muslim, his funeral was held yesterday at Tha It Mosque in Nonthaburi province with attendance of his family members, associates and many key politicians notably from the Democrat Party.

Minister Attached to Prime Minister Office Suwaphan Tanyuvardhana represented the government at the funeral.

I wonder why he wasn't buried in Nakhon Sri Thammarat, his home town.

His death was just so sudden and unexpected, a terrible loss.
