Free AIS Upgrade - That's fantastic - oh but......

Recommended Posts

I just got an SMS telling me that my AIS package has been upgraded from 50/10 to 100/40. That was a nice surprise until I read on to find it was only for 2 months till the end of January.

Seriously?

What are they trying to achieve? Do they think I'll miss it when it runs out and I'll pay for extra bandwidth I don't use anyway?

So you are on 100Mbps AIS now? My TOT bog standard 35Mbps testmy.net fibre optic comes in a little higher than yours?

London 27.5 Mbps
Singapore 37.2 Mbps
LA 26.88 Mbps

Yes, on 100 Mbps now. I had no idea it was happening so wasn't able to do any "before" tests.

The Mrs. has probably got YouTube on the bedroom but not sure how much effect that would have on a single thread test.

Done some more tests, now:

Singapore 30.7 Mbps
London 26.9 Mbps
Los Angeles 20.2 Mbps

I like it and might upgrade at some point in time after the free trial ends.

Yeah, that's right, anyone who would test it out and make a decision based upon the results is a sheeple.

Correct, pleased you agree.

Just another data point, this is what I’m getting from Chaing Mai with the AIS 100/40 trial, according to testmy.net:

London: 16.7 Mbps down; 12.6 Mbps up
Singapore:  86.0 Mbps; 11.3 Mbps up
Los Angeles: 32.2 Mbps down; 19.9 Mbps up

But more important than the benchmarking, for reasons that I don’t understand it has greatly improved the reliability of video streaming.  Even 50 Mbps is 10 times what should be ten time as fast as what’s needed for HD quality but I’m finding that certain paid streaming services, such as NBA League Pass, work much better now.

Likewise on the streaming quality.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the speeds revert to standard after the two months.

If their games is what the cynical side of me thinks it is then 3BB will be getting a new customer.

Agreed, the streaming improvement could be related to something other than the doubling of speed for the free trial.

I've been very happy with AIS since the beginning though, and it doesn't trouble me that there's enough competition among ISPs in Thailand that people argue about whether AIS is the best option. While people in the US are bitching and moaning that the once the government stops guaranteeing them "net neutrality" their local monopolies will screw them over, here we have multiple ISPs offering fibre to choose from, pay less than $30 per month, and get cynical when our ISP gives us extra bandwidth for free.

The interesting thing about people who call other people sheeple is that the think & act the same as everyone else who calls people sheeple. If you think that ignorance is a virtue, maybe that's the right flock for you.
