Yeh bkk, has everything & more, it’s one of my favourite cities in the world to live, in fact I left to go Chang mai for 5 days working and I hated it.

 

just don’t buy a crazy ticket for a crappy place in a hotel on sukhumvit or something

No everybody goes to the Islands...all 8 million of us. Very quiet, don't come nothing to do.

Riverside is good fun. Lots of stuff going on. China town for some food prior before the fireworks maybe. Loads of bars etc around khao san area that celebrate in one way or another.

Agree with DDBKK after spending many New Years in BKK I found the riverside the best place to be.  It also depends on your expectations and situation i.e. family, younger ones etc....

 

There a few bars in the Shukumvit area that can be fun..... make your own fun

What's so special about New Year's eve compared to other nights in the party district? Are the ladyboys prettier? Are the prostitutes cleaner? Are the  customers less obnoxiously drunk? Are the watered down drinks cheaper? Is it the invitation to terror and death?

Ahh but some will say, there's nothing to worry about. Just go to a club and dance the night away. This then brings us to the Santika BBQ where 66 were burnt alive or suffocated by searing toxic smoke,and another 222 were seriously injured, many of whom were left with painful disfiguring burns. This was a firetrap nightclub that should never have been allowed to operate. The actual guilty parties were never brought to justice.

 

Here's an idea; Go for a nice romantic meal, then a nightcap and retire early for the night. You can watch the excitement on the telly whilst holding your beloved in your arms. The masses can  put themselves at risk of fires, bombs, pickpockets and drunk drivers.

 

However, if you want excitement, volunteer at one of the hospitals for the graveyard shift. By  06:00 hours, every drawer in the morgue is full of dead bodies, and the ER corridors are crammed with the injured. It's one of the best times of the year to rummage for body parts.

The biggest celebration is in front of the Central World Mall, hundreds of thousands show up for the Times Square type ball drop and countdown. The entertainment districts are all in full swing, and packed with revelers. Plenty to do in Bangkok on New Year's Eve. 

 

I spent New Year's Eve some years back in Koh Samui, lots of fun there too.

It seems to me if you want a full-moon type of beach-party for New Years, you need to go to a beach. There are many;  I prefer those in the South of Thailand on the West coast in the Andaman sea--Phi  Phi, Lipe, or Railay.  However, if you want a more traditional full-moon type party, go to Koh Tau also in the South by Koh Samui in the Gulf. Lots of New Year's revelry on the beaches.

If you want "fun" go to NYC, USA Times Square.

Be sure to wear Depends, because you can't leave for 8-10 hours and there's no public restrooms.  Also get shit faced before you arrive as there is no alcohol allowed.  Also no food either.

 

But plenty of crazy people, unlike boring Bangkok where there is literally nothing to do besides your the Jim Thompson house, Medical Oddity museum (a farce) and the same same stuff you can do anywhere else in Thailand ( street food, walk streets, shopping, massage).

well... the difference, I guess, is that the parties are a bit bigger, there is fireworks, and everybody is out there, while on any given weekend it's mostly the usual party crowd. So I can't shake the feeling that new years eve might aks for something more impressive than Khaosan Rd., which strikes me more like your friendly everyday partystreet.

 

So.. Riverside or World Central Mall maybe, and Khaosan.. no, they close early, right.. maybe a Sukhumvit-club?

 

Because I just don't feel like going to Ko Pha Ngan for just one night..

I also can not see the difference between  New Year's Eve with a random Saturday. 

You wont see the fireworks, unless you sit in an expensive 20+ storey sky bar.

One can celebrate. I suggested "Go for a nice romantic meal, then a nightcap and retire early for the night. Watch the excitement on the telly whilst holding your beloved in your arms. "  There isn't much fun to be had in a large noisy crowd where one cannot move freely. What exactly is so much better about this one night compared to other nights?  The club events are just an opportunity for the entertainment industry to sell booze and  bad food at inflated prices. They have successfully created the market perception that one must "celebrate" at a public venue.

Every night is a party night when there is a lovely lady in my arms : )  It might be chaperoned if a dog or a cat decides to plop down between us, but such is the adventure of domestic bliss.

Odd that you immediately brought up LBs and prostitutes, wonder why?  You must be used to some classy places if watered down drinks is a significant problem for you.  And, no, New Year is not an invitation to terror and death.

 

Presumably, you're referring to the Erawan Shrine bombing that happened over 2 years ago, and not at New Year, that has no relevance at all to New Year celebrations, again, this year?

 

Why do you think that the Erawan incident "leads us to" the accidental Santika fire that happened 9 years ago and how would that affect enjoying New Year celebrations in 2018?

Aw, come one, don't be like that. There are plenty of good reasons to rummage for body parts with your beloved. Doesn't always have to be necrophilia, could be a dietary thing, or an innocent science project.

Thanks everyone for advice. By "Riverside" do you mean a specific area along the river or just anywhere?
