Dengue vaccine not common in Thailand, import ban not imposed: MOPH

 

NONTHABURI, 7 December 2017 (NNT) – Thailand currently imposes no import ban for a dengue vaccine, which is not a common practice in this country, said Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn. 

He dismissed rumors that Thailand had imposed a ban on the import of dengue vaccines, following reports of side effects on patients in the Philippines, saying that vaccination is not the main practice for dengue disease control as the country is focusing on the elimination of mosquitos as carriers of the disease. 

The import of the vaccine is nor prohibited in Thailand, but the vaccine has not been registered as yet, and is only used at some private hospitals. 

Department of Disease Control official Pornsak Yoocharoen added the vaccine in question is currently the only available vaccine for dengue in the world, and has received certification from the Food and Drugs Administration in 2016.

What a joke.

Between 2011-2013 they tested it on 2,669 school kids in Thailand. And now it is not registered?

Odd. I'm pretty sure there was a large press conference a couple of years ago, in which a research team (I think from Mahidol) ade a big song and dance about inventing a vaccine for Dengue. It was about the time that dengue was in the news having landed in USA, so perhaps the topicality alone makes it dubious.

 

Was it the usual Thai-aggrandising BS or was it real? And if it was real, why is Thailand discussing importing vaccine?

 

Maybe I got it all wrong, or maybe I need to stop being so gullible and taking Thais at their word.

On the contrary, initiating practices to prevent standing water for larva is a proven method to help mitigate the spread of Dengue and other mosquito born infections.

Might be the case elsewhere, in Thailand, the hub of corruption and incompetence, it doesn't seem to be working. As I understand it, the incidence of all forms of Dengue are on the rise.

how do you propose to prevent standing water in a country that is flooded half of the year? Do you know how many provinces are still currently flooded?
