Best course of action???

I have thoroughly read the forums, and there is some great advice on here, but if can be a little difficult to follow, so though I would try to clarify.

My wife and I plan to relocate to Thailand in February. We have regular income from the uk, and plan to top this up teaching English. My wife has a degree and I complete mine later in the year. We both have TEFL and experience of teaching.

Our plan is that on arrival, my wife works (legally, obtaining the WP, etc) and I spend some time completing my degree.

Which leads me to the issue of visas; is our best bet to obtain METV’s? My wife could the change to the B visa once she obtains employment, and I assume I would just continue on my original visa until I obtain my degree, and can seek work legally?

Does that sound “doable”?

On the subject of METV’s, we would be applying at Hull. Would they grant them for the above scenario?

Many thanks for any guidance given.

Yes that sounds "doable".

Hull will issue the visa as long as you meet the financial and other requirements. It's best not to disclose any necessary information about your plans to work as proving you have a business/job to go back to in the UK is one of the requirements of getting the METV. There is nothing stopping you getting jobs once in Thailand.

Once your wife has a job and applies for an extension of stay based on her job, you would qualify to piggy back her permit to stay.

METV from Hull;

If you are employed, a letter from employer confirming that you are or have been employed by them, ie from date commenced employment to date of letter. The letter must not say that you are no longer employed by them.
or
If you are self-employed, copy of your HMRC SA100 or SA105 Self Assessment Tax Form for the last tax year.
or
If you are retired (at any age) and receiving a Private Pension (not State Pension), confirmation of receiving such pension by providing a copy of your Pension Statement or similar which must bear your name and address.

Ah, that is great. I have just left the military, so have a full pension and a monthly income, so I should tick that particular box. Do they still ask for a flight leaving the country......we only plan on getting a one way ticket?

A return or onward flight is listed on the website and I assume that it is enforced. If it is you could buy a cheap throwaway ticket to anywhere. Call the consulate if you want a definitive answer. They are usually very helpful.

I stand to be corrected, but it is my understanding that the honorary consulates in the UK are no longer allowed to issue the METV. I think you must apply (by post or in person) at the London Embassy.

They can issue a METV. It is only multiple entry non immigrant visas they cannot issue.

No need for onward ticket if you have a METV,

It will be needed to get the visa but not to enter the country or board a flight.

I only had a one way ticket when I applied in Vancouver, Canada 1 year ago for a METV.

Is it different for other countries?

It varies at different embassies and consulates. Sometimes even in the same country.
