I recently found out that my Thai Work Permit has my firstname and surname spelled incorrectly in Thai. I didnt think this would be a problem but now realise that the name on the work permit is used for everything. And so I need to get it changed asap. 

 

Will this be a big problem? Do I need to apply for a new Work Permit with all the various documents shown. Or can I go to the Ministry of Labor and get the name changed on the Work Permit without much hassle?

 

Someone told me that I would need an official translation of my passport in order to change my name on the work permit. Though I dont see ejy this is the case considering the reason I am in this situation is that someone from the ministry of labor just decided to make up their own thai spelling of my name.

Thai spellings of foreign names can be different, just use the one on your WP for official work permit related stuff and the alternative spelling you like for other uses.

If a lawyer or company was used to obtain the WP, they should surely correct their mistake for free.

And someone decided to make up the spelling of my name on my condo deed and someone else made up a slightly different spelling on my condo monthly billings, etc. Even if you get an official translation of your passport, someone is just going to make a best-guess shot at a transliteration of your non-Thai name.

 

Since your name presumably isn't a Thai name, unless it's way off base how can it be misspelled?  It's just meant to be a reasonable phonetic approximation.

As long as the English(?)alphabetical name on your WP matches your passport, there should be no problem

Make sure if dealing with the income tax office for any rebates you use exactly the the same spelling as the company does for tax records.

Any differences can cause delay, delay, delay.

My own experience.

There really is no "correct" transliteration of Western names in Thai. It is desirable that the same transliteration is used consistently on all your documents (and I do try to ensure this: having name cards with your name in both languages helps) but inconsistency is not uncommon, occasionally leading to problems but usually not.
