A Tall Order From Pet Vet

Just a light hearted post on a requirement from taking our small dog to the vet the other day.

As well as treatment in the surgery she was given medicine to take at home. Now i have heard half or even a quarter of a table but never one eighth (yes 1/8) of a capsule. Had to divide 2 capsules into 16 gelcaps.

Never done hard drugs but reminded me of all the movies I have watched cutting their powder.

Photo 1. The capsule to divide into 8.          Photo 2. The "cut".            Photo 3. The resultant "stash.

Looks like you did a nice job.  Don't have a fan running while you do this!

You're lucky your pet is a dog not a cat.  So much easier to coax a dog into taking a pill.  When Mr. Bitey had his surgery in August, he was sent home with six meds to be administered daily.  I thought the vet was kidding.  Have you ever tried to get one pill down a cat, let alone six?

We used to have a cat a long time ago in Australia, and, yes you are right they are hard to get pills into. We actually bought a "pill gun" that fired the pill down its throat. I know sounds drastic but It was special for cats and did not hurt him. Much easier to get them into him.

Also remember one time before we had the gun we were trying to get the pill into him and we just could not. Frustrated after many attempts i just sat there holding the pill between my fingers in front of him. He sniffed it, took it and ate it. Obviously a rare good tasting pill.

No, "Mr. Bitey" is his ThaiVisa name, just like NancyL is my ThaiVisa name and Hubby is my husband's ThaiVisa name.  You don't think I'd use the real names of my family members on ThaiVisa, do you?

Mr. Bitey was a "lost cat" that the main character tried to save in the movie Kick Ass.  At times our cat can act like that one. http://kick-ass.wikia.com/wiki/Mr._Bitey

Whaaat? Your cat has a TVF account?

Must say I've not read any of his posts.

No, he's a continuing character in my posts and was my campaign manager for my POTY contests, traveling around the world doing photo ops. During his trip to Canada he posed with this well-known male model, thus securing the Thai-visa female (and gay) vote, but during his trip to the Middle East, he showed he was a real "manly cat" as well not to be trifled with when armed and dangerous.

My cat was not bad about pills usually (a blessing, since she had to take 2-3, twice a day).  Liquid was a disaster, though... foaming at the mouth, spitting, etc. (some did usually end up inside the kitty in the end, but I also usually ended up wearing some of the medicine as well as a good glob of cat spit.  Yes, whenever I had to give her liquid I did wear my big kitchen apron).  Usually it's the opposite, I guess; the vet's office was always aghast when I'd say, "can you give me a pill instead of a liquid?"

One of the pills she was on was famotidine (Pepcid).  Just the regular sort you get at the drugstore.  Only I had to cut it into quarters.  Did I mention Pepcid is tiny?  Maybe 4-5mm in diameter?  I became such a pro at it, though, that I got to cutting the quarters in half thickness-wise-- this made them narrow enough to stuff each half into one of those cat treats that's crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.  At least she got one of her pills in disguised fashion...  (Yes, I know they make those pill pockets for just this purpose, but she wouldn't touch them.  My mom's cat, on the other hand, was so obsessed with them that the rattle of a pill bottle would bring her running.  This was a blast since my mom's on a lot of meds, so every time she needed to take her pills she'd have a cat practically salivating on her lap...)
