Alcohol Control Committee backs draft ban on alcohol vending machines

BANGKOK, 14 December 2017 (NNT) - Thailand's Alcohol Control Committee Board has approved, in principle, a draft ban on alcohol vending machines. The ban was put forward by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The committee, chaired by Assistant to the Public Health Minister Thawat Sunthrajarn, suggested some amendments to the proposed ban to facilitate its enforcement. The draft ban will be shelved until another meeting in March next year.

The committee also endorsed a draft plan for alcoholics suffering from withdrawal. The plan consists of initial consultancy, health restoration, community progressive healthcare and volunteer support.

A survey has estimated that there are over 900,000 teen alcoholics nationwide. Only 160,000 or 6% of them are taking steps to address withdrawal, indicating that alcohol abuse is a matter of national concern.

Impressive figures..........how many of them are pregnant?

Can't remember even seeing one, vending machine, and certainly wouldn't think about using one.

Just ban them.

I wonder where they got those figures from. That is an incredibly high number.

I can't remember seeing one either. Maybe they should just ban everything except what PM Prayut approves of which is very little.

I'm just thinking on the system of cleaning the system and sterilising the pipes tubes etc.

Draught beer systems need a lot of looking after to keep things clean etc.

I think they are mixing up binge drinkers with alcoholics

Only booze vending machine I ever saw had a giant sign above it that said 7-11.

The difference between a sophisticated society and Thailand.

If we take into account the messianic puritanical zeal of the Alcohol Control Committee, who make the "Pilgrim Fathers" seem like a bunch of liberal snowflakes; then any teenager who has shared a beer with a mate in the last six months is probably counted as an alcoholic!

There are some that serve/served 'fresh' beer as they call it. Those are the ones I'm talking about.

Beer in cans from a machine would be ok but control on youngsters buying would be a factor.

does that include these?

The fact that they can't get simple maths right lead me to believe all the figures are just plucked out of the air. I also guess that the term "alcoholics" in this instance may have been misinterpreted during translation

You won't see these in Thailand as the yearly write-off, use of electric, vandalism and (attempted) robberies is way more expensive than employing a Thai monkey.

I thought they already had.
