14 Korean tourists injured in Chiang Mai bus accident

By The Nation

Fourteen tourists from South Korea were injured when their chartered bus lost control and fell into a roadside irrigation canal in Chiang Mai’s Doi Saket district on Thursday, police said.

Among the seven men and seven women, five were severely injured, police said.

The accident happened shortly before noon on a road along an irrigation canal in Tambon Ban Mae Pong.

The bus driver, Suthat Kongngern, 36, told police that he had been taking the tourists from a resort to visit the San Kamphaeng hot springs but the brake system malfunctioned at a curve in the road. The bus then fell into the canal and flipped over.

Suthat claimed he was only driving 30 kilometres per hour.

Police have charged him with reckless driving causing injuries.

Typical reasoning, will the Police check the brakes or just believe the driver. One incompetent lot justifying another incompetent driver.

The charted bus didn't lose control , the driver lost control.

The convention when reporting traffic incidents in Thailand is to assign the vehicle as the subject of the verb. The vehicle lost control / left the road / travelled at high speed / etc.

I speculate this is a self-preservation tactic by journalists to avoid annoying powerful people such as the police or owners of transportation companies.

have these Thai drivers ever been told  to use gears to slow down...even an automatic slows the vehicles down......i use gears often. 30 kms per hour is only 19 mph...so how can the driver NOT control the vehicle.....he could have used the handbrake too..

THAIS are NEVER TAUGHT what to do in certain situations.....this is why so many lives are lost

When they say "Brake Failure" they mean the driver" failed" to put his foot on

the brake!

Tinca Tinca, tachographs are no good it is too easy to manipulate them, the best system is GPS, that cannot be manipulated.
