BANGKOK — Maria Poonlertlarp Ehren may have fallen short last month on the Las Vegas stage but her reign is likely just beginning in Thailand.

Many hoped the Thai-Swedish beauty would become the third Thai contestant to win the crown, especially because her stunning beauty came with an impeccable grasp of English. Though she stalled out at fifth place in the pageant, she came home to an adoring nation and accepted a government offer Tuesday to be a living embodiment of “Thainess.”

Yes, pure Thainess, especially considering how she bungled her answer on the judges question what she considered to be her generation's most important social movement.

It was obvious that not even her

helped her to actually comprehend the question as she evidently had no clue whatsoever what a "social movement" actually is.

But if anything, shouldn't she only be "half the living embodiment of Thainess"? She is, after all, half Swedish too, you know...

the last two lines of the original article referenced above.

“The relationship between Thailand and the West is therefore a love-hate one,” the lecturer said. “We admire Thai-Western actors and singers, while reviling and blaming farangs as they represent capitalism and moral deprivation.”

Gentlemen, I haven't seen much evidence of capitalism on this forum but moral deprivation appears to be as to be right on target. Well Done!!

I remember my friend telling me he had to go to his daughter's school to tell the teachers and staff to stop calling his daughter, 'Farang Noi'. His daughter is half German and half Thai. Gotta wonder how that affects a kid. I wonder if his kid would be interested in representing Thailand when older.

.........................to be a living embodiment of “Thainess.”

Please, somebody, rescue them!

"while reviling and blaming farangs as they represent capitalism and moral deprivation.”

Where do they think the money is coming from to buy (from the Mall Temples of Materialism they throw up daily) all the consumer junk they desperately crave?

Is this not the nation which is one of the leaders in trafficking children for sex?

Obviously they are incapable of seeing how closely "hard" capitalism is woven into their society (their choice) or that child trafficking (their choice, their "tradition") plunges into the lowest depths of immorality.

Astonishing (and at the same time totally unsurprising) demonstration of their extraordinary inability to acknowledge, question or even attempt to overcome their own failings.

Denial and Displacement.

I thought they were too busy being racist towards one another

without bringing in outsiders to the equation.

They both aren't Thai embodiments of anything, they are Thai embroideries.

The one on the right is an android.

and "an impeccable grasp of English" makes her "Thainess" complete ...

This being Thailand and before reading the entire article, I thought the story was going to be that Maria used to be Mario!
